Guest post by Tina Carreiro author of Covet the Moon

About this Author

Tina Carreiro is a multipublished author who resides in South Florida with her family. At the young age of 15, Tina started working to help her family and became a jack-of-all-trades, working in many different areas from managing an automotive shop, to putting her computer programming degree to use. In 2010, she retired from her office job to live her dream and write. Her addiction to romance novels began at a young age when she started sneaking her mom's Gray Eagle series by Janelle Taylor, and it was then her love for writing began. Her paranormal romance series, Power of the Moon, has gained popularity amongst the fans of this genre. Tina became a co-host on Encounters Live, a paranormal radio show, in 2009. Open to all things paranormal, Tina has had her own encounters with the paranormal but still approaches the topic from a logical angle. Tina is married to her best friend and Encounters Live co-host, Matt Carreiro and is a full-time cub scout/camping/gymnastic/PS3/Minecraft mom for her son and daughter. When not writing, Tina enjoys reading romance novels, zombie movies, restoring classic cars, camping, and coffee with caramel macchiato creamer. Poking fun at herself, and everything in between is her key to laughter and a long and healthy life.

Tina has graciously agreed to guest post for me today! Thank you! :-) Because today is Vampire Day for the GGMMMU, I asked her to talk about vampires. Enjoy!

Hello my fellow fang lovers! I was asked to write about anything to do with vampires but what could I write that hasn’t already been said? With the desire to write something original, I thought we’d talk about my vampires. I like to keep things grounded in my fictional world—connected the dots. There’s a plethora of myths throughout history from almost every origin surrounding vampires, and it’s always fun to take something from the myths and build a world around them.

This is what I’ve set out to do in the Power of the Moon series. I’ve taken some old, and meshed it with modern day vampires—minus the sparkle. My vampires cannot go into the sunlight, which follows the Ancient Egyptian myth where a sorcerer called Ra placed a curse on the vampire Set (brother of Osiris) where they couldn’t go into the sunlight, or they’d be destroyed.
If you’re trying to destroy a vampire, instead of kiss one, and mine are very kissable... you can decapitate or there’s that old true method of shoving a stake through the heart. With my books however, I went with silver stakes because I’ve always loved silver. I mean, anything that shreds the heart or removes it will do the job, but silver burns and weakens as well. I knew from the beginning that if I was going to use silver, there’d have to be a reason behind the silver. I’m a girl that asks, why? On EVERYTHING! I need to know how things work. How the pieces fit together.  After much research I found just what I needed and morphed it into the story so there is a reason for silver, and in Covet the Moon I’ve tied up a lot of “whys” and loose ends, while opening some more mysterious doors.
The one thing that I hope sets my vampires apart from others is their heart beat. When a vampire feeds from his soul mate his heart will beat and she will be the only one that can make it beat. Now keep in mind that I have to have things grounded, so when I wrote this vampire characteristic I thought about how the human body handles blood. I thought about blood a lot. I asked my hubby who has worked many homicides and DUIs, my doctors who laugh every time I come to see them but are so eager to help and allow me to interrogate them for medical knowledge.  All the intel I gathered allowed me to create a very insatiable, hungry, and sexy vampire. I’m talking about Detective Cole Barnett.
Once he feeds from Mia, his heart beat causes so many overwhelming desires. It’s a sensory overload. He craves her above all others. And just like the human body, Cole’s vampire body will absorb her blood and his heart will stop beating—until he feeds from her again. This becomes a battle, because the need is so fierce most vampires end up killing their mates, draining them dry to get every last drop of the liquid that calls to them constantly. It’s maddening.
Mesh this together with Mia, Sector 13, and some other myths... you have one hell of a story with vampires being the main paranormal creatures.

Thank you to everyone who has read my work! I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoyed writing them

Excerpt:

John’s decision to come to the turnpike station first had Cole’s fangs edging out. “We should go to the scene, to confirm—” He couldn’t finish the thought. Without his blood inside Mia, he couldn’t be sure, and his entire body was conflicted with doubt. His jaw tightened, and the tip of his fangs poked at the inside of his lip. Removing his clip from his belt, he flicked his thumb underneath the first bullet and ejected it from the clip into his palm. He closed his eyes as the silver burned its shape into his flesh and eased the glow he felt creeping into his eyes. Taking a calming breath, he slid the bullet into his pocket and reattached the clip to his belt.
“Stay calm,” John said, as they walked through the doors to the turnpike substation. Cole responded in a low growl that put John on alert, making his jaw muscle tick.
A young man leaning back in his chair with his feet propped on the table looked up from a set of monitors. “Can I help you?”
“Do you get pictures from the road cameras?” John asked.
“Naw, that’s illegal. The whole “Big Brother” argument. We only monitor them. We get an alert from the radar units on the other poles when a vehicle’s speed registers too low or high and then we check the monitors for trouble.” He smacked his gum with an open mouth chew and turned his attention to Cole as he walked behind the counter. “Sir, you can’t come back here,” he said.
“Are these today’s turnpike tickets?” Cole asked, his jaw set in a tight line.
“You can’t just come back here…”
“Answer the question.”
“I-I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” The young man stammered as he reached toward the phone. Cole’s hand covered his, quickly replacing the phone in its cradle.
“We’re going to have a problem if you don’t answer my question,” Cole said, filling in the space between them. He leveled an assertive gaze at the man.
“Barnett. Back off,” John commanded.
“You-you need some type of warrant or authority to come back here.”
Cole ignored the man and grabbed the tin box from the counter. Pulling out a stack of tickets, he held them to his nose. With a frustrated growl, he threw the stack down and grabbed more from the box. With each stack, he grew more agitated. Picking up the fifth stack, he paused as a familiar scent reached his nose. He breathed deeper and tore through the tickets to pull out the one with Mia’s aroma. It was faint, but it was her scent.
“I need the license plate and the photo of the driver this came from.” Cole held out the ticket to man.
“I can’t do that. I need permission and—”
“Now!”
“Sir, you don’t have the authority…”
Cole snatched his badge from his belt and slammed it on the table in front of the man. “How’s this? No?” Arching a brow at the man’s hesitation his gun followed, slamming down with the same force as the badge. “How about this?”
The man locked into Cole’s deadly gaze. When his eyes widened, Cole knew it was from the glow that had started to appear from behind his irises.
“Still not enough authority for you? How about this!” Cole’s fangs jetted out like a switchblade.
“Holy shit! What kind of cops are you?”

thank you for coming and participating in this event!

i also love that the vampires have several weakness to counterpoint their strenghts.

i do have a question though, if their mate blood makes their heart beats do they still need blood simply to survive because if they do what happen when they haven't found their mate yet? or lost it? do normal blood nurish but don't create the heart beating and feeling overload?

    1. Hi Miki! Thanks for stopping by!

Yes, vampires still need regular blood and it's just food. I created the soulmate blood connection to add a level of danger, and layer to the PotM world. Feeding is one thing, but being so blood-drunk that the vampire may not stop amps it up a bit.

Some may never find their soulmate, but there is the hope of finding that connection. Some have killed their soulmate in a fit of blood-lust. There is no physical change for not finding or losing a mate--just the undying hunger.

If I could parallel an example... If you've ever choked or had the wind knocked out of your lungs then you've experienced that exhilarating feeling of taking your first breath again--you're alive! Now shift that feeling to a vampire feeding from his mate and his heart starts to beat. Blood pumps through the veins and into other organs, filling them and bringing them to life. Oxygen fills the body, making the skin tingle... These feelings are what fuel the undying hunger.

I hope this answers your questions. :)

  3. I love that you have a reason for everything. I've read some where they use the whole vampires can't be around garlic and I'm always questioning why. So I love that you actually explain it and have reasons. So kudos to you! :) I've had these on my wishlist for a while so I hope to read them soon. Thank you so much for coming by and posting!
