VBT: Giveaway and Review ~ Soul Sucker by Kate Pearce

BLURB:

Supernatural Branch of Law Enforcement empath Ella Walsh sucks memories from people's heads. The job fills her mind with others' nightmares and leaves her with little time for love, but if she doesn't pair off with a mate of the government's choosing soon, the psychic blowback will destroy her powers and her sanity.

The last time shapeshifting SBLE superstar Vadim Morosov worked with an empath, he got her killed and himself assigned to a desk. He worries about taking on another partner, but helping Ella track down an empath killer might be his only chance to save his career.

Naturally, the government decides to throw them together.

They resist at first, but they can't deny the simmering heat between them. As the killer's strikes grow closer to home, their bond gets tighter. And when the murderer finally traps Ella, her developing link with Vadim might be the only thing that can save her.

Here's an excerpt:

Feehan bumped into her and Ella jumped. “You okay?”

“I’m good,” she managed. “Are we going up?”

“Yes, I’ve already cleared it with the necessary authorities.”

She rode the elevator up to the eleventh floor in silence while Feehan yakked into his cell phone. She didn’t like elevators and she didn’t like the vibe she was getting at all. There was a sense of immense psychic power laced with a triumphant glee that made her want to puke. Whatever had murdered the woman wasn’t quite human. She wasn’t surprised that someone had picked up on it and called for help. Despite the government officially failing to recognize the SBLE, most first responders were more than willing to pass the difficult cases over to them.

As usual, the crime scene was busy. Ella stood back and viewed the setting as objectively as she could. The victim was sprawled naked on the couch, arms thrown out, her expression fixed in a grimace that could have been either horror or extreme pleasure. Or both.

One of the cops started talking to Feehan. Apparently, there were no obvious wounds on the body apart from a little blood coming from the woman’s ears, nose and mouth. She’d been drinking, and there were no signs of an intruder.

The older female cop lowered her voice. “I’m the one who called you guys.” She shivered. “I just got a real bad feeling about this. I’ve learned to listen to my gut.”

My Thoughts:

In Soul Sucker I found a mix of paranormal characters that was both pleasing and surprising. Mostly it focused on Fae characters and empaths (humans with the ability to remove people's thoughts hence the name soul sucker). I found it surprising that there weren't any vampires.

The mystery and suspense started almost immediately and held a steady pace through out the book. There were some hot and steamy scenes and even more scenes with Ella (the empath) and Vadim (a Fae hunk) verbally sparring. :-)

The underlying focus was trying to solve a slew of empath murders and stop a serial killer before he kills more of them. Ella is one of the main investigators on the team. Vadim gets called in to help because he has experience with a similar case that may have the same killer. Sparks fly between the two almost immediately.

I liked that the mystery wasn't solved early on and the two of them didn't find themselves instantly in love either. I really hope that we see more of these characters. I'd like to know more about how Liz and Doug got together. I'd also like to see more of Ella and Vadim, and I need to know if Alexei is really friend or foe.

That said, if there aren't already more books planned there should be!

I recommend this book to those who like some suspense in their paranormal books. This one won't disappoint!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I honestly liked it and I am begging Kate to give us more!

In this story empaths were more or less feared because of what they could do.

How do you think you would feel?

Kate will be awarding a $15 Amazon or B&N GC, winner's choice, to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour.

  2. I don't think I'd like someone invading my mind, but if they could remove bad memories from my mind forever, it might not be bad. This sounds really good. I love when a romance comes out of a life and death situation. Mostly because the male gets all alpha. :)

  3. There is detail that bothers me... normally an empath can feel other emotions not the thoughts that would be an telepath then

i think both case are hard on the one with that ability, feeling emotions that aren't your own without knowing the reason behind them ( yes hapiness but hapiness for what reason, same with despair etc)... at the end you aren't sure what you are feeling yourself really disturbing.
Now i remember a book where there were empath but of two kind those who could feel other emotions and those who could projet an emotion to other.. it was used for example to help in the hospital or to avoid mass panick when there was disaster etc....but no one was really better than teh other you need an iron control.

For telepathy, knowing others thoughts ( or same idea another kind that can put idea/thought in other minds)... i think that's even worse because thought and intention aren't punishable so what can you do if you know someone wants to kill another or to torture him etc... as long as he hasn't done anything you can't act such responsability... even higher because you must put some limit to preserve the privacy of other and if it's a native power you use ot as a defense mecanism but you must control it to be accepted by other... so difficult.

    i guess i would be more at ease with an empath ( of teh definition i used) because knowing how the other feel can help the conversation, the realationship it can be frustrating yes even more with someone as emotional as me since he or she will be in for a rollcaster most of teh time^^;;

a telepath...it would be a little harder because i'm shy and secretive there are secret that already nearly destroyed my life several time and i wouldn't like someone to take the choice out of me to reveal it or not.

Now in the case of someone with the power to take away feeling or though.... i wouldn't want him tu use it on me yes i 've terrible memories that still hurt me years later but i admit they are part of me, it's because i know what means suffering taht i wouldn't wish it on other, it's because of that i learned to be more compasionnate . of course i wouldn't wish that to any one else but it made me who i am so i prefer to keep the hurt. if some people do another choice let it be but it' must be a responsible choice not one done on haste or at the difficult time/ I don't think any one has the right to decide in place of the thought/ emotion owners
Now i pity the one who would have this job because it means also to accept more suffering that the one that was destined to him/her

i do like the sound of this book though, the fact the romance is growing and that teh investigation are lasting ^^( but it's the goverment that decide who she can love or just her job partner?)

    2. Miki, th Government suggests a mate for them but they can decide not to take them up on it.

lol! That is the longest comment you have ever left. :-)

Ella doesn't fit into one of your neat catagories. She isn't what we usually think of as an Empath, she is soooo much more. I just know you will like this one as much as I did.

    4. I didn't mean to imply that it was too long. I'm just surprised to see you say as much as you did. Usually your comments are shorter. Not that I mind either way. I am glad to see that you feel better!

  4. Thanks so much for having me on your blog and I'm glad you enjoyed the book!
Also, don't worry, there is another book coming out in October this year called Death Bringer which carries on the story literally the day after this one stops, so you get more bickering between Ella and Vadim and get to know him a lot better. :)
As for the empath thing, I just used that word because I needed something short and snappy that would work with my paranormal world, so she isn't technically a real world empath more a fictional one.

I don't think I'd like to have bad memories removed from my head either and to take them on? That would be a hard burden for anyone to bear.

    2. oh a special kind of "empath"^^ if she is one the few it's really normal they don't have a specific term for her^^

i trust Brenda so if she is saying i will love this, i will^^ and i'm already glad to learn there will be more

  5. I guess it would depend upon what they used their powers for. It it was only for removing bad memories then they could be seen as heros, otherwise I could see fearing them

  6. I've been following some of the tour on this one and it sounds really good! Im not really sure I would like someone knowing what Im feeling if I didnt want them too? But its less invasive then a telepath.. They would make great shrinks though! :)

  7. Shannon R,That's a great comment, I think that's the problem, she is feared because she's different and even her colleagues and family aren't quite sure what to make of her. :)

  8. VampedChik.
she mainly picks up communications from Otherworld beings rather than humans, Her job is that when one of us comes into contact with something terrifying that we can't make sense of (like the monster under the bed or something) she extracts that memory and gives a logical explanation for what happened so that the person can go on with their lives. The other part of her job is to chase down the thing that interacted with the human and send it back to its own world. :) Sort of Moonlighting meets the X-files. :)

  9. Congratulations on the publication of your new book, Soul Sucker! Sounds like a very exciting read, but in real life I would not want an empath taking my memories.

  17. As an empath I can see how it would be very difficult to have a normal life. To see/feel such horrific moments would be disturbing to say the least. I can also understand the flip side. It would be hard to be near someone that you felt could steal your memories and feel everything you felt.
