THE YEAR OF THE NOVELLA by Marisa Cleveland

"It's better to have less than organize more."

For 2014, I'm focusing on downsizing. Actually, I've been downsizing for many years.

It all started in 1999 in Fairfax, Virginia, when my hubby and I thought we needed to fit in. We bought big... and we've been downsizing ever since.

From 3,800 square feet to 2,881 square feet, I've lost a lot of "stuff" over the years. But I don't miss any of it, and after browsing the Naples Charity Register, I'm more than excited to champion charities close to my heart.

So... In honor of downsizing, I'm giving away novellas, the downsized version of the novel.

Everyone who comments on this blog will have the chance to win, and it's an exclusive giveaway happening on this blog today only!

Steps to enter:

1. Comment on this blog - any kind of comment - what you love about the blog, what you love to read, what you're reading now, what you plan to do this weekend, anything... just a comment.

2. Check back throughout the day to see who the winners are.

Book Description:

Time is not on everyone’s side…

Mortal mess-up Lucy Markson makes one tiny miscalculation and her soul ends up belonging to an evil demon. Forced to serve the newly fallen angels recruited by her master, she must take one of the fallen through the seven deadly sins.

Fallen angel Sawyer Succendo didn’t jump from heaven. He was pushed. And now he’s lost everything, including his halo – which contains his earthbound soul.

In a race with an evil demon to claim his lost halo, Sawyer must trust a woman designed for sin – literally. Learning the true power of free will, Sawyer just might save them both, if he can keep his mind on the plan and his hands to himself.

But if he can’t find his halo and save the girl, then he’ll be grounded forever.

Excerpt:

One thing was certain. Fallen angels were hot. And not the ninety-eight-point-six kind of warmth, either. Oh, no. These Fallen fit every corny pick up line she’d ever heard. Because they were exactly what they claimed to be. Created by the hands of God and in His own image.

How would she ever choose one to feed and then… They were all beautifully gorgeous. She tilted her head to the side.

Except for him.

Dried blood marred the side of his temple and stained his sharp cheekbones. A gash sliced across his left eyebrow ending at the corner of his blackened eye. His swollen lower lip also sported a crack with still-fresh blood threatening to trickle down to the divot in his chin. Naked as the day he was born – or created – his torso and thighs held an interesting pattern of scars that haphazardly healed.

He rubbed his chest with one hand, his golden eyes widening in alarm, and in that moment, Lucy knew she absolutely had to be the one to serve him. His entire demeanor differed from the others. He hesitated to join the others at the banquet table, almost like he didn’t want to partake in the feast, even though she knew he had to be starving by now. Still, he reminded her of… her. A reluctant guest.

  2. 3800 might not seem like a lot to some people, but it was too much for me. :) Thanks so much for having me! I can't wait to share my love of novellas with your readers. :)

  3. "Pushed" out of heaven? Nice. This sounds like my kind of paranormal novel. ;)

  4. I love novellas, Marisa. It's fun to begin and end the story (as a reader) in one sitting. In today's hurry up world, I think novellas are only going to gain popularity. :) And 3800 is twice the size of my house. With a smaller house simple is best, but I feel like I'm always simplifying. I guess that's sort of like editing. :) And I'm always doing that too! LOL

  6. I'm supposed to be editing, but I keep sneaking off to read more of "Pushed!"
I spent the weekend pitching books. I know, that's almost blasphemy, but knowing that I can get almost anything in e form now is very liberating! I still have too many books, but...

  7. Your novella sounds awesome! I agree with Cecy; the "pushed out of heaven" makes me want to read more. Please! Also, 3800 sq feet!? Wowza. Just cleaning would be a full time job.

  8. I've bought two print books in the last year - one at a book signing for a fellow author and another at the airport because I forgot my Kindle. I'm e all the way, baby! That's my version of downsizing - not to accumulate any more print.

  9. Yay for downsizing. I'm all about the giving things away/throwing away if it's not been touched in a year. Harsh and sometimes I've regretted it, but I can't stand having things cluttering around... LOL!!! :)

  10. I'm reading AT LAST by Jill Shalvis right now and WOW is it AMAZING. Every time I read one of her books, I get warm fuzzies. Thank you for including me in the giveaway options, Risa!!! :)

  12. I'm right there with you. I've been downsizing ever since I lost my business in 2007. I went from the Mac counter to buying my makeup at Target and I couldn't be happier because I'm so rich with friends and family.

  16. I know I need to downsize, but I have to admit I love picking up a big fat epic fantasy and knowing that I have all those words to enjoy.
Since I've been trying to cut down on all my stuff, maybe I should try a novella.

  17. Not just downsizing, I respect that you & your hubs made a conscious effort to do with less and not worry about fitting in. Bravo!
This is a fun idea to give away a novella.

  19. I've been downsizing for a while. It's amazing how much stuff a person can get bogged down with. My biggest weakness though...books and movies. I've been trying to weed them out over time. I love novellas! They're what I call those hit-the-spot books when you need a fiction fix : - )

  20. You may have heard my theory on downsizing - the less house you have, the less you have to clean. Ha! And a novella is the perfect foil for downsizing! :)
