THE YEAR OF THE NOVELLA by Marisa Cleveland

"It's better to have less than organize more."

For 2014, I'm focusing on downsizing. Actually, I've been downsizing for many years.

It all started in 1999 in Fairfax, Virginia, when my hubby and I thought we needed to fit in. We bought big... and we've been downsizing ever since.

From 3,800 square feet to 2,881 square feet, I've lost a lot of "stuff" over the years. But I don't miss any of it, and after browsing the Naples Charity Register, I'm more than excited to champion charities close to my heart.

So... In honor of downsizing, I'm giving away novellas, the downsized version of the novel.

Everyone who comments on this blog will have the chance to win, and it's an exclusive giveaway happening on this blog today only!

Steps to enter:

1. Comment on this blog - any kind of comment - what you love about the blog, what you love to read, what you're reading now, what you plan to do this weekend, anything... just a comment.

2. Check back throughout the day to see who the winners are.

If you win an ebook, you will be asked to email marisa@marisacleveland.com with the email where you'd like the book gifted. All ebooks will be gifted from Amazon.

Excerpt:

One thing was certain. Fallen angels were hot. And not the ninety-eight-point-six kind of warmth, either. Oh, no. These Fallen fit every corny pick up line she’d ever heard. Because they were exactly what they claimed to be. Created by the hands of God and in His own image.

How would she ever choose one to feed and then… They were all beautifully gorgeous. She tilted her head to the side.

Except for him.

Dried blood marred the side of his temple and stained his sharp cheekbones. A gash sliced across his left eyebrow ending at the corner of his blackened eye. His swollen lower lip also sported a crack with still-fresh blood threatening to trickle down to the divot in his chin. Naked as the day he was born – or created – his torso and thighs held an interesting pattern of scars that haphazardly healed.

He rubbed his chest with one hand, his golden eyes widening in alarm, and in that moment, Lucy knew she absolutely had to be the one to serve him. His entire demeanor differed from the others. He hesitated to join the others at the banquet table, almost like he didn’t want to partake in the feast, even though she knew he had to be starving by now. Still, he reminded her of… her. A reluctant guest.

Guestblog by Teresa D'Amario, author of Visions of Fire and Ice, giveaway too

Teresa D'Amario was kind enough to guest post for me! :D

What makes Egyptian mythology different?

When I first decided to write a book about Egypt, I knew it would mean some references to Egyptian mythology, but not to the point it has become. The problem is, Egyptian mythology is convoluted and difficult to figure out who is who, so I was stuck. I purchased a few books, and every one said different things about the same gods and goddesses. How can that be?

It wasn’t until I found one that explained that each area had their own religion, and each changed the gods and goddesses to support their needs that I understood what was happening. Each single author I’d read to this point was looking at ONE aspect of the entire mythology. As I began digging deeper, I realized that the aspects of each god was completely different, depending on who was writing the book. On top of that, the age of the book played a big part as well. For example, books written before the 1970’s seemed to indicate Set, the god of chaos, and Apophis, the snake who fought against Ra to try to keep the sun from rising, were one and the same. I’m not sure when this theory was adjusted in theories of ancient Egyptian mythology, but now we know that Set, the god of chaos, was said in most stories to have fought against the Aphophis in protection of Ra.

So how do you take such a wide and varied field and apply it to a romance setting? It’s easier than you might imagine. Because I, like the Egyptians, create my pantheon based on what I need them to be. For instances, we all know the stories of Set, Horus and Isis. Or do we? There are so many variations. In some, Set is a good guy, in others, a bad. In some, he is fighting because he wants Isis for his wife, in others, he fights for power. In some, Isis kills Set, in others, he’s provided two wives, and left to control the deserts.

What about Isis? We think of her as the all powerful mother goddess. She protects women, and children. She brings children back from the dead. But if so, why is it when Horus is killed by a scorpion sting, she cannot save him and must turn to Thoth? And why does she very nearly kill Ra just to learn his real name? When you read the mythological stories, Isis is very deep. She is very protective and loving. But she is also power hungry and cunning.

So which traits do you use? It depends on what I want them to do.

I don’t want to give any secrets away about book 2, so I won’t tell you who my next god is to make contact with our little family from North Carolina, and with the race of the Petiri from another world. That would just not be fair, but secrets abound in all THREE camps, so keep reading, and watch for even more excitement within the world of the Petiri and the Egyptian gods and goddesses.

About this Author:

Born in Atlanta, the daughter of an Army Soldier during the early stages of the Viet Nam war, I spent my childhood traveling from state to state, finally ending up overseas in Germany where I graduated high school six months early.

My writing career however began as a young Airman in the Air Force, writing monthly articles for the weekly base paper. The articles ranged from climatological data to full center fold articles on the destructive forces of hurricanes. As I increased in rank, my writing changed to more technological instruction, including such works as WSR-88D Doppler Radar Data Interpretation Guide for North Carolina Stations, and Station Operating Procedures.

But my early writing wasn’t limited only to the technological side. I’ve written multiple dog training and behavior articles for canine websites such as Sonora Canine Freestyle, and also the Ask Blackjack column, a fun training column in the voice of my labrador retriever, then a young pup.

My first book, SheWolf, won 2nd place for Best First book in RWA’s PFF&P Prism awards.

Excerpt:

Tamara pulled out the costume with a grin. It was red. Fire red. Small bits of orange peeked beneath the folds, enhancing the image. This would be perfect for her youngest sister who always teased her about the fire she herself wielded. She held the costume before her, judging its size. A spark of energy caught her attention, and she raised her eyes to Ramose. He was moving toward her, his muscles tight, his face pale in the darkened light. But his eyes, they burned with unfettered need.

Tamara swallowed. Hard. Never in her life had she expected to see any man, much less Ramose, look at her the way he did now. What had she done to trigger such a response? Maybe he thought shopping was sexy. Hell, it didn’t matter. He had the look of a man ready to cross to the next level in their relationship. No, not the next level. He looked ready to leap all the way past and into a new relationship. His eyes were filled with need, but other emotions glimmered beneath the surface. Possession. Relief. Stark, irreversible hunger.

Before she could utter a word, he was there, pulling the dress from her fingers, handing it to the shopkeeper still standing beside her.

He spoke in rapid Arabic, handing the man cash. The store owner protested loudly, probably hoping for a good bartering session.

Ramose totally ignored him, his focus glued only on her. Never had he seemed so tall. Powerful. And even imposing. Tamara stepped back. Just moments before, he’d stood across the room, silent, watching. Now his scent whispered over her, dark and sensuous. Her blood rushed through her veins, heating her body in response. She bit her lip at the sudden onslaught of emotions and need building inside her. Inside, her heart fluttered in panic, while the rest of her body yearned for him. She was part rabbit, part tigress. She was terrified. She was starved.

“I can….” She could what? Pay for it herself?

Ramose leaned forward, his lips brushing against her ears, his breath feathering across her neck.

“Nanik,” he whispered fiercely.

Mine, her mind translated.

Tamara’s heartbeat spiked, and her knees weakened. She grabbed the clothing rack and struggled to breath, yet it was impossible. Not with him so close. So hungry. Did he suddenly recognize her as his soul mate? Did he have that skill as well? She tipped her face to meet his gaze. Heat coiled low in her belly. His scent stripped her of her desire for control. The fear fluttered inside her, yet she ached for more, to feel his lips against her flesh.

The hard lines of his jaw, shadowed by the late afternoon beard, combined with the power surging from his being, gave him the look of a warrior of old. Demanding. Powerful. And sexy as hell.

Her body moved of its own accord, leaning forward, blending his heat with her own. Muscles inside her softened, melting, while others drew taut, hungry for his touch. Her lashes fluttered, her eyes heavy, her mind and body drugged by this man’s desire.

“Ramose—”

But he wanted none of her words. His eyes silenced her, as though he were afraid she’d reject him. Long, warm fingers closed over hers. It was the first touch of what she hoped was soon to be more. The pulse in her throat beat a rapid staccato message. Need. Fear. She wasn’t even sure which held more power.

When the shopkeeper returned, Ramose held out his hand, not even looking at the man. His fingers closed around the plastic bag, and, without a word, he turned, escorting her out the door.

Once outside, they moved past the small shop, pressed inward by the throngs of people surrounding them. He didn’t seem to care. He stopped, right in the middle of crowd, tugging her hand until she turned to face him. His eyes raked over her, searching. With calloused fingers, he brushed away the wisp of hair now falling in her face. The heat from his fingers burned her flesh, regardless of his gift of ice.

“Kha-Ib.”

The word was so soft, so worshipful, she had to strain to hear it. Tamara shook her head. “What, Ramose, what is it?”

“Nanik,” he whispered again, his gaze softening, offering her a smile of wonder.

Oblivious to the crowd surrounding them, Tamara’s knees wobbled. She should be running, racing to her hotel to block away the world. This was too fast. Too dangerous. And, yet, the sudden possessiveness in his response only built the hunger inside her. Her gaze moved to his lips.

She wanted to feel him. Against her mouth. Hungry. God, what was wrong with her? His arm hooked about her waist, and, as his head lowered, she tipped her face to meet him. Wanting. Breathless.

His gaze held hers, even as his face inched closer.

When at long last their lips met, her heart, the one she was sure had quit beating, exploded in her chest, pounding as though to crack her ribs. The exquisite heat of his lips burned against hers. Oh, God. Please. Please what?

He groaned when she wrapped her arms about his neck, drawing even closer to him. He swept his tongue over her lips. She needed no further encouragement. For the first time in her life, she didn’t hesitate when a man touched her. She opened. And, when their tongues met, it was divine.

The inside of his mouth was hot and hungry, his taste an explosion of wild masculine heat, and, yet, he swept in slowly, as though in wonder, tasting her. The chill of his mouth drew her, cooling the overwhelming heat burning inside her. The combination of need and gentleness sent a shudder of hunger through her body, and she wanted more, needed to crawl even closer.

This sounds interesting to me. ;-)

VBT: Review and Guest blog by R.L. Naquin author of Pooka in My Pantry

I am thrilled to have R.L. Naquin guest posting today!

The Idea Garden by R.L. Naquin

This is the last stop on my month-long virtual book tour. I am exhausted. I’ve met some lovely people, answered a lot of questions about myself, and tried not to bore people with my guest posts.

Out of eleven interviews, I learned that people really do want to know where writers get their inspiration and ideas. To a writer, this is kind of a funny question. The real question is, how do I turn off the ideas so I can get some sleep?

It wasn’t until a woman in a hair salon asked me the question that I finally understood. She said she doesn’t have any stories in her head and can’t imagine how I come up with them.

I was baffled. How do you not have characters chattering in your head all the time? How do you not start half your sentences with “What if?” How do you live all your moments in the real world?

And then I realized, my bewilderment was an exact replica of hers.

Up until that moment, I thought the question was a joke, and I answered it that way:

• I belong to the Idea of the Month Club and get a new batch every four weeks.

• I have a potted idea garden in my yard. Whenever I’m short, I pick a few fresh ones.

• I buy ideas wholesale.

• I steal them from your brain by osmosis.

• I have a steady flow of them from an implant aliens stuck in my skull.

• I perform rituals to the Great One-eyed God of Wombats and he provides them.

• I put out bowls of cream, and fairies leave me ideas in exchange.

But now, I understand. It’s a serious question, so it deserves a serious answer.

The truth is, ideas come from everywhere:

• A snippet of conversation from the table next to me in a restaurant.

• A striking hair color on the woman ringing up my groceries.

• A fever-induced dream after eating bad sushi.

• A newspaper article about a woman who says she gave birth to a snake.

• A story my grandmother told me when I was little.

• A ridiculous outfit worn by a guy walking down the street.

• A silly thing I saw my neighbors do.

All the pieces come together, rearrange themselves, and become parts to a story. It all starts with a question—What if? Everything after that is an attempt to come up with a plausible answer.

In the first Monster Haven book, Monster in My Closet, the question was “What if the closet monster from your childhood was sitting at your kitchen table in broad daylight?” For book two, Pooka in My Pantry, the question I started with was “If you cheat death twice, would the Reapers make you pay for the privilege of being alive?”

Everything that followed was taken from life, then smashed, hammered, folded, spindled, mutilated, and pasted together to form the most plausible, yet weird answer I could come up with.

I don’t know if I’ve answered the idea question or made it worse, but I’ve given it a try. If not, then go ahead and assume writers are just crazy, and ideas are a side effect of insanity.

It’s probably closest to the truth anyway.

Thank you so much for this awesome guest post. I too get baffled by the creativity that comes from all of you talented authors. My family often says that for as often as I read, which is ALWAYS, that I should be able to write a story myself. I would love to be able to write but it just isn't gonna happen. :-(

Book Description:

Zoey Donovan—empath, wedding planner, go-to girl for monsters with personal problems—has been marked twice for pickup by Death. On both occasions, Riley the smoking-hot reaper has refused to follow through. For his breach of protocol, Riley is now on probation. For her refusal to die on schedule, Zoey's right to live is challenged. She will have to undergo a life-or-death trial, but she won't know when or where it will happen…

Staying alive might not be so difficult if the Leprechaun Mafia hadn't strolled into town. Now every business owner with the slightest connection to the supernatural community is being threatened with the most appalling bad luck if they don't pay up. Mirrors are smashed, bodies are dropping, and Zoey's still got clients waiting for fabric samples.

With a little luck, she might be able to save everyone and still have time for a second attempt at a decent first date with her favorite reaper.

Here's an excerpt:

You help one monster in need, and everybody hears about it.

The recent appearance of various monsters and mythical creatures in my life took some adjustment. But no amount of flexibility prepared me to assist in the live birth of a sea serpent in my own backyard. That’s a lot to ask of anybody.

My swimming pool looked like a major crime scene, and I was pretty sure bits of mucus mixed with dried blood flecked my hair. I’d probably have to take out a personal loan to cover the water bill once I took a three-hour shower, then drained and refilled the pool.

When the sea serpent appeared in my pool a month before, I had no clue what to do about it. Fortunately, Maurice, my resident closet monster, was quick on his feet. While I stood slack-jawed at the kitchen window, he ran to get Molly to be our translator. Fluent in all sorts of crazy creature languages ranging from house pets to gargoyles, Molly, the brownie, lived in a mushroom house in my backyard with her kids.

As it happened, she was unable to decipher a word of sea-serpentese.

Fortunately, a pygmy dragon with a nasty cold had recently spent his convalescence in my garage. Molly spoke dragonish, and Bruce, the dragon, spoke serpentese. Problem solved.

Except it took over three weeks to find Bruce, leaving us with no idea why a listless, snorting sea serpent had moved into my swimming pool. Communicating in pantomime with a creature that had no hands was futile, absurd and probably hilarious to watch.

When Bruce (via Molly) explained the situation, I did my best not to panic. The sea serpent was pregnant, but she could tell something was wrong. Naturally, she came ashore to my house for help, since everyone in the supernatural community seemed to think I had the answer to every problem.

I had no experience delivering healthy babies of any species. All I had to go on were basic anatomy and zoology classes in college, and a wealth of medical procedural shows on television. And yet, something inside me clicked when Frannie went into labor and the baby stopped moving. I jumped into the water without a thought for my spangled, dry-clean-only shirt, or for the discomfort of wet jeans and high tops. In hindsight, I should’ve at least kicked off my shoes.

I’m not sure how to describe the supreme ick factor of having both arms shoved up to the elbow inside a sea serpent’s body. The baby was turned wrong, kind of folded in half and pointed to emerge center-first, rather than in a straight line with its head or tail facing the exit.

“Don’t push, Frannie,” I said. “I have to unfold the baby or it’ll stay stuck.”

Molly made a series of grunting snorts, which Bruce translated into a series of clicks and yowls. I felt the serpent relax around my squashed arms and wrestled the slippery baby into a better position. Another contraction hit and I stopped, waiting until I had more room to work.

The mournful cry from Frannie needed no translation.

When the contraction was over, I made another grab with one hand to hold the baby steady and pulled the head with the other. I’m not a dainty woman, but I’m not big enough to palm a basketball, either. That’s what it felt like I was trying to do in there, only the basketball in question had eyes I needed to avoid poking, and it was covered in what felt like tapioca pudding.

I got a good grip on a dorsal fin at what I hoped was the back of its neck as the next contraction hit.

“Push!”

Clacks and snarls followed down the translation line, and Frannie pushed while I pulled. My other hand shoved, guiding the rest of the baby straight. Once the head slipped into place, nature took over, and out everything slid. Right into my pool and all over me.

As an empath, I try never to leave the house without my protective walls up. The emotions of other people tend to overwhelm and drain me. But I was at home, and I was exhausted. I’d been so focused on the birth that I hadn’t built any barriers, so there was nothing between me and the small group around me to barricade my psyche against what wasn’t mine. I stood in the frigid water, unconcerned by my shaking body or the gore that covered me.

The emotional inrush saturated me in love and happiness.

Frannie nuzzled her new offspring, and a quiet joy settled over me, warming my freezing flesh. From Molly’s direction, relief lay across my shoulders like a heated blanket, and Bruce’s delight prickled my skin in electric jolts. My eyelids burned. I closed them to relieve the sensation. My back bumped against the side of the pool, and I let my knees bend so I could float.

Worry.

Panic.

They shot through the other emotions like tiny arrows. My eyelids cracked open, but only for a few seconds. Nothing was wrong. All was right. My job was done, so what would it hurt to take a little rest?

Thin fingers dug into the flesh in my arms, hauling me from the pool. I made a weak attempt to slap at the intruder.

“Zoey, come on, wake up.” Maurice was there, dragging me away from the water and piling towels on my wet skin.

My eyes snapped open. Well, crap. I lay flat on the pavement, still shivering, despite the previous illusion of warmth. Bodily fluids coated my skin, and Maurice had covered me with my good towels.

The closet monster’s big yellow eyes hovered inches from my face. His worry was so intense, it blocked all the warm fuzzy stuff happening behind him. He coaxed me to my feet, fussing at the towels to keep them from sliding off, and leading me into the house.

“Seriously, Zoey. I don’t know how you stayed alive before I got here. If you didn’t drown, hypothermia would’ve had you.”

My Thoughts:

It is times like these that make me thank my lucky stars that I blog and actively participate in blog tours. I am fairly certain that I would have missed this series otherwise.

Pooka in My Pantry was a wildly charming, hilariously entertaining, non stop page turning adventure.

This book could be read as a stand alone but I would suggest reading book one, Monster in My Closet first.

In this book we get more of the excitement we have come to expect. We meet some new characters such as Silas the Pooka and spend time with some of our favorite characters from the first book as well! :-) I have to say that I love the characters. I wouldn't mind having a Maurice of my own!

Poor Zoey is still trying to deal with being stood up by Riley when more stuff hits the fan. She is being tested and monitored by the Board of Hidden Affairs to see if she is an Aegis (a human helper of the Hidden). There is a bad luck streak going around as well as a sudden (or not so sudden) appearance of the Leprechaun Mafia. A pooka with no boundaries decides to move in and never mind all the trouble that brings. lol! There is not much romance just some kissing but it was extremely enjoyable none the less. :-)

This series is mostly light hearted and fun, with quirky and highly imaginative writing, situations, and characters. This is not a series that you want to miss! I really recommend checking these books out. :D

I received a copy of both books in exchange for my honest opinion. For a great time read this series! Both books were awesome and I am looking forward to reading Fairies in My Fireplace later this year!

What would you do if you found a monster in your closet or a pooka in your pantry?

VBT; Review, Giveaway and Guestblog by Rebecca Trogner author of The Last Keeper’s Daughter

Rebecca Trogner is guest blogging for me today!!!!

In my debut novel, The Last Keeper’s Daughter, there are vampires with key roles. While I don’t believe that this defines my book as only about the vamps it does put it into the category of mostly for women. I’ve never understood why men don’t enjoy a good vampire story as much as women, but it seems that while we swoon the menfolk just roll their eyes at us. So I got to thinking about why I love vampires as much as I do.

The Big O. It has to be said that there is usually really good sex involved whenever a vampire is in a story. There are some books that don’t follow that pattern, but I prefer a sexy vampire over a gnawing, raging one any day. What woman wouldn’t like the thought of a man who can satisfy all their desires, endlessly?

The Foreplay. There is something erotic about all that nibbling around our necks, wrists, and thighs – let your imagination fly ladies – that is highly attractive. A vampire has all the time in the world, literally, to explore and adore our bodies. What woman wouldn’t like that?

The Beefcake: Vampires are almost always sexy and never, ever get a beer gut, unless they were turned that way. There was that unfortunate Eddie on True Blood…… Seriously, in general, they are lovely creatures who lure us in with their bodies.

The Alpha Male: They are predators who lust and desire and need us. They are powerful and fast and deadly; the ultimate bad boy without the jail visit. These quality make a woman feel powerful as only we are able to soothe or incite great passion from them. To know how fragile we are in comparison and not to be afraid, because the vampire is our protector and we are destined to be together.

The Free Time: Most writers adhere to the nocturnal vampire; it gives women time to yearn for their vampire. They have the daylight hours to shop, work, see their girlfriends, sleep, take vitamins, etc. There is never the question, “what’s for dinner?” No hours wasted slaving away at the stove when you’ve got a vampire at home.

The Intelligence: They have life experience. I love the idea of all the history a vampire would have seen firsthand. There would be endless hours of conversation and never would you hear the same story twice, or have to laugh at some stupid joke.

The Moodiness: Living forever can cause a certain amount of moodiness in some vampires. I see this as a plus though, because they understand when we are moody.

So there you have it, the top reasons I adore reading a story or watching a show with a good vampire character. I hope you get the chance to read my book, The Last Keeper’s Daughter. I’ve meshed all the genres I love so much into it. There is romance, mystery, the paranormal, and a tiny dash of horror all wrapped up inside the pages.

Here is an excerpt to whet your whistle:

Krieger sat in the oversized chair, letting his arms hang down almost to the floor, and inhaled deeply of her scent, now richer, more complex than it had been before. He’d never encountered anyone who smelled so enticing. Her blood beguiled him, like a flower lures the bee to its sweet nectar. He wished to sink his fangs into her soft skin, to feel the first spurt of blood hit his tongue. He groaned with anticipation. To a vampire, blood and sex were intertwined. When he’d healed her with his blood it had taken a great deal of restraint not to seek his own physical fulfillment. He was ill prepared to deal with an innocent. His fingers wrapped around the legs of the chair, and the sound of wood snapping under pressure made him release his grip.

Her eyelids fluttered. It took a few attempts before she turned her head and stared at him. He remained motionless.

“You had a bad fall at the party, remember?” He raised his hands, palms facing towards her. “You’re safe, at my home.”

Her face, already flushed, became a deep shade of red. He could hear her heart beating hard and strong. He fought the urge to taste her.

“You came for me.” Lily spoke softly. “I was afraid you wouldn’t.”

He remembered what the doctor had said, and knew the volume was not important, but that she was speaking meant a great deal.

“How do you feel?”

She took stock of her body. She raised the once injured shoulder, and then looked down, amazed.

“I healed you.”

She slid up, clutching the sheet to her neck, and rested her back against the headboard. The rose tones of the coverlet highlighted the perfection of her skin. He pondered going to sit on the bed next to her, but decided she needed to feel comfortable and safe in his presence, not hunted into a corner.

She spoke out the word, “How,” on a long breath.

He liked how she didn’t ask ridiculous questions. She cut straight to the point.

“With my blood.”

Lily glanced into his eyes, maybe gauging the truth of his words. She nodded and looked down at her hands. He had anticipated some sort of feminine theatrics, but she showed no emotion that he could decipher.

“I don’t remember that.”

“When did you remember me?”

“On the mountain,” she said, staccato quick.

He kept his face impassive.

“I’m not–” She ran her hand over her shoulder again. “Am I?”

“Vampire,” he finished her question. “No.”

The sigh of relief made her thoughts clear. He wondered if she would be more receptive to the idea after the years had ravaged her beautiful face.

“Did Walter leave this for you?” He laid the small watercolor painting on the bed.

She nodded.

Standing up, careful to move at human speed, he motioned towards the hallway leading to the bathroom and dressing area. “Everything you need will be provided. For now, you should rest.”

Lily shook her head. “I feel fine.” She started to get up, looked down, and tightened her hold on the coverlet.

“Clothes are in the dressing area. Do you need assistance?”

Her expression said she did not.

“Can you walk?” Krieger asked.

She nodded.

He went to the French doors and turned his back to her. “Go on. Call out if you feel weak.” Modesty was something foreign to Others. They did not feel shamed or embarrassed by nudity. He hadn’t thought about this and wished the doctor had clothed her. He heard the lock mechanism on the connecting door click into place. If it made her feel safe then what harm could it do?

Krieger heard her walk back into the room. He stayed where he was, waiting to see what she would do. When she came to stand next to him, he was pleased.

“Stoke Castle sits atop the Blue Ridge mountains. Waverly is within view below us.”

Lily stepped closer to the French doors, her hand reaching for the door knob.

“Dawn is upon us. It would be best if you refrained from going outside until I exit the room, or until the sun has set.”

Lily went completely still again, much like a rabbit will hide in tall grass.

“How long have I been asleep?” she asked.

“You’ve been unconscious for a day.” He let her take a moment to process the information. “Look at me.”

She turned, which pleased him, but did not raise her eyes to his.

Placing his forefinger under her chin, he lifted her face upwards. “Look at me,” he said with a kind firmness. “I have lost the ability to trance you now that you carry my blood.”

“Trance?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

He ran his fingers lightly over her cheek bones and rested his hand against her face. “Your father told me that you hate to be touched, and yet you do not flinch away from me. It is good.” He bent down to place his lips next to her ear. “You have no need to fear me.”

My Thoughts:

Thank you for guest blogging for me today Rebecca. It is one of my favorite guest posts to date. ;-)

This book was more mystery than romance. It had my attention pretty much from the beginning till the end.

Lily was an intriguing character and I really liked how her and Krieger interacted. The characters were my favorite part of this story. I loved them. I thought the idea of Vantors (vamp/ were hybrids) was awesome.

It begins with Walter, Lily's father asking Krieger (the Vampire King) to watch over his daughter for him. Krieger agrees but plans to have someone else actually do the watching. That is until he sees her. ;-)

There are many twists and turns. This book is very intriguing and it had me hanging on every word, page after page. I can't wait to read book two.

I really liked this book and recommend it to every one who likes vampire books, mystery, or just a great read in general.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my opinion. I was caught up in the story from start to finish. I thought it was a terrific addition to the selection of vampire books available. I really enjoyed it. :D

Which one of Rebecca's reasons is your favorite for watching or reading vampires?

Or do you have one that she didn't mention?

VBT: Giveaway, Review and Guestblog by Victoria Danann author of The Summoner's Tale

Thank you Victoria for guest posting for me!

Victoria, based on your bio, I'm thinking you must be insanely busy. A post on how you find time to write amid all of the other things you are involved in would probably be enlightening.

This is the number one question I field not just as an author, but socially and professionally. My schedule sounds crazy even to me. For those who haven't seen the bio, here are some of the high points.

I own 7th House Publishing. Although I'm no longer personally involved in the day to day operations, there are decisions that must be made almost daily. I author and illustrate Seasons of the Witch planners, now in its fourteenth year. I manage Houston's top party band and, although I'm not currently playing, I dedicate some time to keeping up my musical skills: keyboards, guitar, and vocal. I play bridge six to ten times a month because it keeps me sharp. and I write fiction. Oh, wait, I may have forgotten to mention a husband, family and German Shepherd, but they are definitely part of my day.

A few days ago a bass player I know called to ask if I wanted to be the utility player in a Classic Rock band. Of course my first reaction was, "YES!!" Then I remembered that clones are just a wish and not a reality.

So, how do I do it? Surprisingly, the thing that takes the most time is not even on that list. That would be the marketing of my paranormal romances. Since I'm an Indie (sort of), I'm responsible for getting the word out about Black Swan. This interview is part of that.

I wear all the marketing department hats including the one that says "graphics". I do the covers, the ads, the book trailers and the SWAG myself. I design and maintain the website, the blog, and participate in the Goodreads fan group. I recently took on an author's assistant whom I share with a couple of others and that helps enormously, but it doesn't turn twenty-four hours into forty-eight.

My day starts sometime between 2:30am and 6:00 depending on how much is on my mind. I answer emails, post on Facebook, log and analyze my book sales, update the website and blog and take care of any other marketing-type chores such as renewing ads or commenting on reviews. I take the dog for a walk/jog in the woods, take a shower, and have breakfast. Back at the computer, I take care of 7th House business and band business before lunch. (It helps that I work from home.)

On days when I'm in: after lunch I beat down the other fires that have cropped up through the morning and continue to deal with issues from the various enterprises through the day. On days when I have errands, appointments, or play bridge: after lunch I may be away for three or four hours then I come right back to it. When there is time left between that and starting dinner at six, I write.

The only thing different about Saturday and Sunday is that I add musical instruments into the mix plus one social event and one date with spouse.

This is the way things go during my "outline" process. But once my extended outline is complete and ready to start writing in earnest, I start to feel driven and need to take big chunks of time to just write. I don't take personal time even at night. My husband gets dinner. I eat with him and then come back to it. That stage of my writing usually takes three weeks to a month.

Once the manuscript gets turned over to my editor, add a flurry of daily emails to my schedule: This sentence seems clumsy. Are you sure you want to say ____ that way?

That's the story of how it all gets done.

Now, about A Summoner's Tale... If you haven't read Books One and Two, I hope you will do so before you read Book Three. Black Swan is a serial saga meaning that each book is actually a chapter installment in an ongoing story. This particular installment involved characters that were introduced in the first book.

If you read by Kindle, you will find A Summoner's Tale available at Amazon after release. If you another e-reader, you can still get the book in the form of an anthology that will be available in electronic format everywhere. The Order of the Black Swan Collected Tales, Books 1-3. $6.99 for all 330,000 words. This is a dream come true for me because readers will experience the first three books as conceived as one story.

About the Author :

For the past fourteen years, Victoria has illustrated and authored Seasons of the Witch calendars and planners for 7th-House.com.

Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of her mind for years. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch, I play rock music and manage one of Houston's premier R&B/Variety/Pop bands.

This series will include some of my actual experience in the paranormal with fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing "metaphysician", but most of the material is fantasy.

My Thoughts:

This series is one of the best paranormal variety series that I've found since Sookie Stackhouse! You would be hard pressed to find a supernatural being that is not somehow involved in this series. The books just get better and better.

I would advise reading the books in order. Each one picks up where the last left off.  The books have an ending, they do not leave you hanging. :D That being said, it is easier to follow the series if you know what has already happened.

Each story was engaging to the point that I tuned everything else out. I jumped from one book to the next  to the next until I was done with all three. They were magically delicious and I devoured them.

These books have supernatural creatures, a secret order that takes out the supernatural garbage so to speak, hot hunky men, women who know how to take care of themselves and their men too, wonderful imagery, visits to places all over the globe, lots and lots of action, romance, exciting storylines, and an awesomely charismatic cast of characters.

The interaction between the characters was fun and flirty. I love that although each book features a different character, they are all in it together. In other words, I got a chance to catch up with my favorites in each book in addition to meeting new friends!

This has quickly become one of my favorite series!

This is one series that I don't think it's possible to improve on. As I read each book, I thought there was no way the next book would be as good and I was blown away. I don't know how Victoria Danann keeps it going and going with new ideas and characters without  losing the umph that she already has. She truly is a remarkable story teller!

All three books were fantastic. I am looking forward to being dazzled by book four as well.

I urge each of you to read these books if you like paranormal books. You will NOT be disappointed. Right now (February 14th) both books one and two are FREE on Amazon US (See the links above)! Book one, My Familiar Stranger,  is also FREE on Smashwords. :D The way I look at it, this gives you the perfect opportunity, to find out for yourselves just how fantastically awesome this series is!

I received a copy of all three books from Bewitching Book Tours in exchange for my honest opinion. I Absolutely, without a doubt, 100% LOVED, LOVED, LOVED all three books!
