The Twisted Truth by Erin Armstrong

SYNOPSIS

Michelle Marshall is a strong independent woman with a lot of baggage. Raped right before the start of her senior year of college, Michelle grows to be a caring, single mother to her daughter. Things begin to look pretty grim when the Charity House, the women's shelter she founded, is on the brink of having to close its doors. That is, until Tyler Austin, a mysterious and handsome stranger comes into the picture. Helping Michelle resuscitate the Charity House, Ty also helps her learn to trust, love and feel what she hasn't in years. Not everything is quite as perfect as Michelle would like though, as occasional hints lead her to believe something is not quite right. Her suspicions are confirmed when even more frightening developments occur and start to become...deadly.

Excerpt:

The letter showed up at Michelle’s front door on a Friday morning. Placed on the welcome mat was a black envelope with her full name typed on a white label with no return address. It was obvious that whoever had left the letter took the trouble to deliver it personally.

Michelle suspiciously picked up the envelope and walked quickly back into her house. Shiloh had left for school 20 minutes ago. Her half-eaten oatmeal was still on the dining room table. As Michelle took the bowl of cold cereal into the kitchen, she wondered if the envelope had been there already when Shiloh left.

She walked back to the table where she had left the envelope and opened it slowly. She began to read the letter carefully. The letter only consisted of five words, typed out in bold black letters, with each word underlined. There was no signature, of course, and no sign of where the letter had come from. These five words meant everything and nothing to Michelle all at the same time.

With the letter in her hand, she made her way through the foyer and up the staircase. She tapped the letter against her leg as she climbed the stairs to her bedroom. When she opened the door, she was greeted by a burst of warm air and hot steam. Michelle sat on her king-size bed, her eyes focused on the bathroom door.

Ty stepped out of the bathroom. His chest was still wet from his shower and he wore a white towel around his waist. He stepped out into the room and smiled. His body was perfect. Michelle couldn’t deny that. He was one of the most complete men she had ever known. From head to toe he was the man that every woman hoped for. At that very moment, Michelle wanted him. She wanted to jump on him right then and there, but she knew that there were more pressing issues to deal with.

He made his way to the bed, leaned down, and kissed her forehead.

“Mornin’ baby. You look tired. Did you sleep okay?”

Michelle didn’t say a word. With a shaky hand, she held the letter out in front of her. Her hands had begun to shake. Ty took the letter, unfolding the paper and reading it silently. Worry lines formed on his forehead. He balled up the paper and threw it on the floor. His demeanor changed instantly. She watched him pace from one side of the room to the other, and his breathing got heavy.

Michelle stood and walked to the window where Ty had finally stopped. He didn’t look in her direction. He kept his focus outside. She could tell that he was in deep thought. He had reacted the exact same way the night the black car had appeared outside of her house a few weeks ago. In both cases, his demeanor had scared her a little. She had become so used to his gentle side that when he got into protector mode, Michelle didn’t know how to respond to him.

She placed one hand on his shoulder and slipped her other hand into his. “Ty, what’s this all about? Does this have anything to do with that person I always hear you arguing with on the phone?”

Ty turned his head, finally making eye contact with Michelle. She could feel the tension radiating off of his body. His eyes didn’t give much away, but his body language did. His shoulders were slumped and his arms fell loosely at his sides.

Ty took Michelle’s hand and sighed. “There really isn’t anything to tell, Michelle. I don’t know who would send this to you. I’m tellin’ you the truth.”

Michelle ripped her hand from his and walked to the opposite side of the room.

Throwing her hands up, she yelled in frustration, “Are you kidding me, Ty? You look like you got caught with your hand in the damn cookie jar and you have the nerve to tell me you don’t know what this is about?”

Ty reached for her hand only to have it smacked away.

Moving closer to her, Ty pleaded. “Baby, please. I’m not lying to you. And if I’m actin’ funny, it’s
because I’m mad as hell that somebody would send something like this to my woman.”

Michelle bent down and picked up the paper that was now in a crumpled ball. She opened up the paper and stared at it.

Looking up at Ty she narrowed her eyes. “Ty, I’ve told you time and time again that I have trust issues. I’m willing to give you a chance, but if you’re lying to me--”

Ty pulled her close to him. “Baby, I would never lie to you. I love you.”
