Book Description:

Unemployed, blacklisted, and pregnant, Sophie Scaife’s life is totally upside down. Her relationship with publishing magnate Neil Elwood is on the rocks. Her best friend’s career is igniting. And Sophie is afraid she’ll make one of the toughest decisions of her life alone…

When a devastating diagnosis forces Neil to return to London, Sophie throws caution to the wind to follow her heart across the Atlantic. Keeping a scorching D/s affair as red-hot in sickness as it was in health is a challenge, even for two lovers as inventive as Sophie and Neil. But Sophie is more than willing to try anything her Sir commands, and their fantasies of control become a welcome refuge from the daily stress of illness.

While Neil’s wealth and privilege make adjusting to her new situation easier, Sophie finds herself rebuilding her life around an uncertain future. And while both of them face the changes between them head-on, they’re all too aware that their happiness may be fleeting—and Sophie could lose Neil forever.

Excerpt:

How do you tell the guy who just tried to break up with you that you’re pregnant with his baby?

When the doors opened on his floor and I stepped into the softly lit vestibule, Neil was there already, waiting for me.

When I saw him, my stomach dropped like I was in the backseat of a minivan going over a bad hill. He was pale, he looked tired, and the smile he gave me was worried and forced.

But he was still Neil, so handsome and tall, with his in-between-blonde-and-brown hair and his gorgeous green eyes. My heart flip-flopped, like it always did, since that first moment we’d met at LAX over six years ago.

“Hello, Sophie.”

“Hey,” I responded in a short, friendly monotone as we moved into the inner foyer. His apartment, which I had just begun to feel comfortable in before our near-breakup or breakup-in-progress, whatever was happening between us, suddenly seemed like a stranger’s home. I’d had a difficult enough time getting used to the fact that my boyfriend lived in a Fifth Avenue palace with checkered marble floors and a freaking home movie theatre. Now I felt like I had to be on my very best behavior.

Neil helped me with my coat. “You look very pretty,” he said softly.

I hadn’t changed out of the crème-colored cowl-necked sweater and soft old jeans I’d worn to the doctor’s office. I didn’t feel particularly pretty, but I murmured a thank you all the same. I noted his salmon button down. “It’s not pink, it’s salmon,” he had argued with me a few weeks ago, before we’d tumbled playfully into his bed.

I blinked back my tears at the memory. “You’re not so bad yourself. Did you go to work today?”

“No, I was just so tired of hospital gowns. I needed to get dressed or end up deeply depressed.” His laugh was short.

I wanted to touch him. I wanted him to touch me. I just wanted everything to be okay between us.

He led me to the kitchen, where Sue had laid out our neatly plated dinners. “Halibut, I hope you don’t mind.”

“It smells amazing.” It actually smelled awful, but I didn’t hold that against his housekeeper. It was the uninvited guest in my uterus. It made everything smell ten times stronger than usual. I looked around the kitchen. The counters were scrubbed clean, the light was off over the stove. I slid into one side of the breakfast nook. “Sue’s gone for the night?”

“I didn’t ask her to stay on past seven.” He went around the wide, marble-topped island and reached into the cooler beneath, coming up with a bottle of white wine.

“None for me, thanks,” I said, too quick. He gave me a strange look, and put the bottle away.

That was weird. He usually liked wine with dinner.

Oh god, he was probably staying sober to let me down gently when he broke things off for good. The wine was for me, to drown my sorrows, if necessary.

I completely lost my appetite.

“So...” He sat down across from me and unfolded his napkin. “It’s been a while since we’ve talked. Any developments in the job hunt?”

I knew what he was asking me. “I didn’t take the job with Gabriella.”

He nodded, and poured ice water into my glass from the carafe on the table. “Were her terms—”

“You know why I turned it down.” My hands clenched in my lap. I was more angry than I thought I would be. I’d been preparing for this moment, steeling myself against hurt and disappointment so that I could walk away with dignity. Instead, my emotional control snapped like a rubber band and I accused, “How dare you.”

“Sorry?” He looked like a man staring through the windshield of a car that was nanoseconds from hitting him.

“You did it again. You pushed me into making this huge decision, but you acted like you were somehow protecting me. You did it when you stole my plane tickets six years ago. Now you tell me that I have to take this job because it’s a wonderful opportunity, and you magnanimously declare that you’ll let me go if you have to.

“You didn’t even ask me what I wanted. You didn’t tell me what you wanted. It’s like you don’t care about the outcome, you just don’t want to feel responsible for it.”

“Magnanimous?” he repeated, outraged.

My hands were clenched to fists beneath the table. If we were going to break up, then we might as well raze this fucker, salt the earth, and poison the ground water. “If you didn’t want to be with me... then just break up with me. Don’t force me to make the choice for you.”

He was struggling to control his temper as he said, measured and controlled, “I wanted you to slow down and think about what you were doing, and where we were headed. You keep pushing me away—”

“I keep pushing you away?” I snorted derisively. “When I got to the hospital the other night, I was so worried about you. Then, you basically break up with me and try to make it seem like it was for my own good. For four days, I felt like I couldn’t call you or see how you were doing, while you were in the fucking hospital. I had to get updates from Deja, and all of those were total bullshit. Exhaustion? You don’t get exhausted.”

“On the contrary, I was quite exhausted,” he said quietly.

I looked up, and I knew he could see how furious I was from the way he slightly flinched when our eyes met. Good.

I reached into my pocket and fished out the ultrasound image. I placed it face down on the table and slid it toward him. “I needed you. I called you eleven times because I was freaked out and scared about this. And I came down to the hospital afraid something really horrible had happened to you, and I was thinking about all the stuff I would miss about you if you died. And what the hell was I going to do about this?”

He lifted the photo and turned it over. It took a moment for him to register what it was. I saw a surprising mixture of emotions in his expression, things I didn’t expect. I’d been prepared for angry, or scared. Maybe cold, or strained and polite. Instead, his eyebrows lifted and he blinked in momentary shock. The slightest smile twitched at the corner of his lips. He looked pleased, maybe even a little proud.

I clasped my hands together under the table to stop myself from trembling. The longer he looked at the photo, the more the color drained from his face. There it was. That was more like what I had expected.

He looked up, throat moving as he swallowed. His eyes met mine, and a sick feeling of dread curdled my stomach. Whatever he was going to say, I knew it was going to be bad. But it was so much worse than I had expected.

“I have cancer.”

My Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Abigail Barnette was also Jennifer Armintrout. :-) I have read many of her books written under that name. This one is only meant for adults. ;-)

That being said, This is a first time for me reading any of her adult books. I have to say that it is amazing to me to see the scope and range of diversity in her writing. She is just as talented at writing this style of book as she is at writing her YA books.

I read all three books because I am just greedy that way. ;-)

The book that started it all was aptly named The Boss. You can correctly assume that much of this book happens in a workplace setting.

Sophie has an awful boss but she endures her position with the hopes that she will go places under her direction. Imagine her shock when said bosszilla doesn't show up one day. She is going crazy wondering what is happening when in walks a few men. Neil Elwood tells her that he is her new boss and Gabriella no longer works there.

This is all very shocking but the most startling is the fact that she has seen her new boss before. Years ago they shared an inspiring night of sex. She knew him as Leif though not Neil and he doesn't seem to remember her.

This book is extra hot and super descriptive. You'll also find romance, drama, ulterior motives, secrets and did I mention an older dominant man?

The second book picks up were the first left off. Again, you can correctly guess that the two decide to become a couple by the title, The Girlfriend.

This book had more drama and hurdles for the lovebirds to get around in addition to the steam and romance.

I had quite a few issues with this one. First and foremost, Sophie is preggers but doesn't really even think about it or consider what Neil wants. She has an abomination. I meant to say abortion.

Neil is diagnosed with cancer. :-( Sophie moves to be with him. :-) She helps to care for him which is great. However, while his health declines, they decide that she should have sex with someone else (while he watches). I prefer my couples to have a deep and meaningful love that is so all consuming that they couldn't even think about being with someone else.

Sophie seemed very selfish in this book.

In the third book, The Bride, you should expect someone to get married. I both liked and disliked this one. Neil's bisexuality is more evident and it freaks me out a little.

Mostly though, the two are happy with each other. :D

Overall, I like this series. I'm just impatient for them to seal the deal and have a happily ever after.

If you like erotic books that feature a relationship between an older man and younger woman, BDSM relationships, and unconventional sexual practices, you should read these. ;-)

The next book is expected sometime this year and is titled The Baby, to be followed by The Ex. The title of the last book has me feeling a little apprehensive. Okay I lied, it has me feeling very apprehensive. Can't anyone just achieve a happily ever after without all of the drama? Or is it perhaps featuring a different set of main characters? I hope that I won't be left wondering for long! :-(

I received ecopies of all three books in exchange for my honest opinion. Honestly, The Boss was my favorite of the three. It was hot and engaging. I didn't want to set it down. The other two were  decent reads but both had things that I didn't care for.

Interview with Susannah Scott author of Luck of the Dragon

I was able to interview Susannah Scott. :-)

The following is what she shared with me:

Hi Brenda,

Thank you so much for having my on your site today to celebrate the release of my Paranormal Romance, Luck of the Dragon! I am excited to have you here. :-)

1. Out of all the books you've written, if you could live in one of them which would it be and why?

My first book was a fantasy romance with magicians and castles and such. That would be awesome for a while. Then, I might want to switch to the opulence, and running water, of the Crown Jewel Las Vegas Casino.

2. In what scenario do you do your best work?

Steady progress. Sprinting makes me obsessive. I also like writing on my walking treadmill desk, or my couch. Two extremes, but they work for me.

3. Paper or plastic?

Plastic, but I endlessly recycle those suckers into lunch bags, bathroom trash liners, ect. LOL! I do too. Way to help the environment. :-) Yay us!!!

4. What food can't you live without?

Eggs. I have blood sugar issues and I eat eggs every single morning. It is so boring, but it sets me up for a healthy day.

5. Inside or outside? Outside, on the river.

6. What is your favorite sport?

I am a crossfit chick. So for myself it is what every my local gym (box) has programmed. For me, I really enjoy watching the summer Olympics every four years. All the sports, one right after another!

7. What is your favorite or least favorite veggie and fruit?

I can’t think of a fruit I don’t like! I hate lima beans, black-eyed peas, and barbeque sauce. I am not crazy about pickles and raw onions either.

8. What is your favorite animal? A dog, for sure.

9. What is your biggest pet peeve? Hypocrisy.

10. Which books have been on your tbr shelf the longest?

I have an Elizabeth Hoyt novel on my nightstand, but I haven’t cracked it open yet because I have been covered up with edits. I use books as a reward for meeting my writing goals. I tend to read outside my writing genre. Rachel Gibson, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Sherry Thomas and Lisa Kleypas are some of my current favorites.

11. What are you working on and when can we expect it to be out?

Stop Dragon My Heart Around will be out this spring. It is Leo and Tee’s story. A fun, friends to lovers tale with lots a sexy bantering. Tee is part of the Las Vegas Paiute tribe so there is a cool theme of “belonging” that runs through the story too. What it means to belong to the dragons, to a tribe, to each other?

12. Can you give us a short excerpt from Luck of the Dragon with the set-up?

Alec and Lucy have some really great arguments. This one in Alec’s office is one of my favorites:

***
Alec opened the door to face 130 pounds of fury.

“I am a respected professional and you are manhandling me and treating me like a criminal!” Luciana yelled at him.

Alec handed her the drink and sat in a deep-seated leather chair. The chair sighed with ease when he leaned back. He crossed his ankle at his knee and took a sip. “Luciana—”

“Oh, please, all my captors call me Lucy.” She glared at him. “You sound like a priest hearing confession when you call me Luciana.”

“Well, we can’t have that.” Alec chuckled and sipped his own drink, the taste of mellow corn mash and oak barrels tingling over his tongue. Alcohol did not affect dragons in the way it affected the feeble humans. He drank the bourbon purely because he liked the taste.

“Does this have something in it?” Luciana held the drink to the light.

“I wouldn’t harm you.” Alec took a second sip of his drink, and it fired down his throat to his belly in a pleasing trail.

Lucy set her drink on his desk, untouched. “I’m not the trusting sort.”

Alec gave her what he hoped was a charming look. “You can trust me. I can help you.”

“You’ve got to be kidding,” Lucy said in a voice used to stopping cabs.

“Fine, don’t trust me, but I need you to start your appraisal tomorrow,” Alec said in a voice used to calling stretch limos.

Lucy’s face flushed. Her collarbones rose and fell under her pale skin in elegant lines.

He wanted to kiss her, to see if the zing of electricity was a fluke, or if the fates had gone mad and paired him with a human mate.

She might bite him.

He might like it.

***
This sounds awesome. :-) Thank you for sharing it with us. I can't wait to read it!

Thank you again for having me on your blog, and giving me an opportunity to connect with your readers!

Please feel free to stop back anytime. I LOVE to share. If you let me know when you have new books etc... I'll be sure to let everyone know. :-)

Driven by K. Bromberg ~ review and giveaway

Book Description:

Rylee Thomas is used to being in control. But she’s about to meet the one man that just might make her enjoy losing it…

I am the exception to the rule.

In a world full of willing women, I’m a challenge to the roguish and achingly handsome Colton Donavan. A man used to getting exactly what he wants in all aspects of life. He’s the reckless bad boy constantly skating that razor thin edge toward out of control, on and off of the track.

Colton crashes into my life like a tornado: sapping my control, testing my vulnerabilities beyond their limits, and unintentionally penetrating the protective wall around my healing heart. Tearing apart the world I rebuilt so carefully with structure, predictability, and discipline.

I can’t give him what he wants and he can’t give me what I need. But after a glimpse beneath his refined exterior into the dark secrets of his damaged soul, can I bring myself to walk away?

Our sexual chemistry is undeniable. Our individual need for complete control is irrefutable. But when our worlds collide, is the chemistry enough to bring us together or will our untold secrets and battle of wills force us apart?

Excerpt:

“Jealous, sweetheart?” He raises his eyebrows as his grin flashes arrogantly. “We can always finish what we started, and you can mark me any way you’d like.”

I gently shove my hand against his chest, pushing him back. I’d love to wipe that smirk off if his face. Leave my mark that way. “Sorry, I don’t waste my time on misogynist jerks like you. Go find someone—”

“Careful, Rylee,” he warns as he grips my wrist, looking every bit as dangerous as his voice threatens. “I don’t take kindly to insults.”

I try to yank my wrist away, but his hold remains. To anyone in the room, it looks as if I’m laying my hand on his heart in affection. They can’t feel the steel strength of his grip.

“Then hear this,” I snap, tired of this game and the warring emotions and sensations within me. Anger takes hold. “You only want me because I’m the first female who’s said no to your gorgeous face and come-fuck-me body. You’re so used to every female falling at your feet, pun intended, that you see a challenge—someone immune to your charm—and you’re unsure how to react.”

Despite his nonchalant shrug, I can see his underlying irritation as he releases my wrist. “When I like what I see, I go after it,” he states unapologetically.

Shaking my head, I roll my eyes. “No, you need to prove to yourself that you can, in fact, get any girl who crosses your path. Your ego’s bruised. I understand,” I patronize patting his arm. “Well, don’t sweat it, Ace, I forfeit this race.”

He raises an eyebrow, a ghost of a smile on his lips as he finds something humorous in my comment. The muscle in his clenched jaw tics as he regards me momentarily. “Let’s get something straight,” he leans in, inches from my mouth, the gleam in his eyes warning me I’ve gone too far. “If I want you, I can and will have you, at anytime and in anyplace, sweetheart.”

I snort in the most unladylike way, astonished at his audacity, yet trying to ignore the quickening of my pulse at the thought. “Don’t bet on it,” I sneer as I hastily try to skirt past.

His hand whips out and grabs hold of my arm again, spinning me back toward him, so that I’m standing intimately close. I can see his pulse beat in the line beneath his jaw. Can feel the fabric of his jacket hit my arm as his chest rises and falls. I glance down at his hand on my arm and glare back at him in warning, yet his hold still remains. He leans his face in to mine so that I can feel his breath feather across my cheek. I angle my head up to his, not sure if I’m raising my chin in defiance or in anticipation of his kiss.

“Lucky you, I’m a gambling man, Rylee,” his resonating voice is just a whisper of sound. “I do, in fact, like a good challenge now and again,” he provokes, a mischievous smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He releases my arm, but runs his finger lazily down the rest of it. The soft scrape of his finger on my exposed skin sends shivers down my back.

“So let’s make a bet.” He stops and nods at a passing acquaintance, bringing me to the here and now as I’ve forgotten that we’re in a room full of people.

“Didn’t your mother teach you when a lady says no, she really means no, Ace?” I raise my eyebrow, a look of disdain on my face.

That smarmy smirk of his is back in full force as he nods in acknowledgement at my comment. “She also taught me that when I want something, I need to keep after it until I get it.”

Great, so now I’ve acquired a stalker. A handsome, sexy, very annoying stalker.

He reaches out and toys with a loose curl on the side of my neck. I try to remain impassive despite my urge to close my eyes and sink into the whisper of his fingers across my skin. His smirk tells me that he knows exactly what his effect is on me. “So, like I said, Ryles, a bet?

I bristle at his proposition. Or maybe it is at his effect on me. “This is asinine—”

“I bet by the end of the night,” he cuts me off holding a hand up to stop me, “I have a date with you.”

I laugh out loud stepping back from him. “Not a chance in hell, Ace!”

He takes a long swallow of his drink, his expression guarded. “What are you scared of then? That you can’t resist me?” He flashes a wicked grin when I roll my eyes. “Agree then. What do you have to lose?”

“So you get a date with me and your bruised ego is restored,” I shrug indifferently, wanting no part of this contest. “What will I get out if it?”

“If you win—”

“You mean if I can resist your dazzling charm,” I retort, my voice laced with sarcasm.

“Let me rephrase. If you can resist my dazzling charm by the end of the night, then I’ll donate,” he flickers his fingers through the air in a gesture of irrelevance, “let’s say, twenty thousand dollars to your cause.”

I catch my breath and look at him in bewilderment, for this I can agree to. I know that there’s no way in hell that I’ll succumb to Donavan or his captivating wiles, the arrogant bastard. Agreed, I was caught in his tantalizing web for a few moments, but it was just because it’s been so long since I’ve felt like that. Since I’ve been kissed like that. Been touched like that.

My Thoughts:

Adults only!!! This book was scorching hot right from the get go! :-) If you have a what to read after Fifty list, you'll probably want to add this one!

I really liked the setting and the heroine, Rylee. The hero, Colton, not so much. I guess he's not all bad but I just can't quite make myself like him.

I am looking forward to the next book. :-)

I would recommend this if you like hot reads!!! ;-)

I received an ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I really liked it.
