Review ~ Veil Of Secrecy by R.M. Alexander

Rachel Brackett arrives in Sullivan, Montana with simple goals: relocate, settle an estate, and manage her own antique store. Her parents and friends back home called it running away. That’s just fine with her.

Rachel’s curiosity leads her into the forest, and she finds creatures who know more about her ominous heritage than she does. The creatures only exist in nightmares – grotesque mutants and shapeshifters. They seek vengeance for hideous crimes in genetic engineering, and Rachel is the prime target for retribution. While Rachel searches for the truth behind the family she never knew, a bounty hunter stalks her every move. Only Leonardo, a figure shrouded in the shadows, offers protection. A were lion with the perfect blend of human and feline features. Terrifying. Impossible. Alluring.

When Rachel’s home is ripped apart and a friend attacked, it’s clear there is no safe haven. She is no longer running from her past, but trying to survive to make it to her future.

My Thoughts:

I struggled with this one. Well no not really, you see, what I mean is that I started this one, then set it aside. I read five other books before I managed to stick to the task of finishing it. It was good but just didn't keep my interest at first. I blame it on one thing. There was an element missing from most of the book. It was not a smudge on the book, it was never promised to be part of it, I was just hopeful to find it. Can you guess what was missing?

It was romance. Romance is the one thing that would make this book better. There was some feelings shared between two of the characters but it was a sweet beginning at the very end. Therefore, I have high hopes there may be more of it in future books.

I should warn, if you are looking for scenes that are hot and sweaty, you won't find them. The most romantic action is a kiss on the cheek. Yes, I do enjoy a good erotic romance but I also enjoy clean written romances when they are well written. It wasn't the steamy action that I missed so much, it was the chemistry between two people, the feelings that it evokes from me, and the anticipating of their HEA.

The type of characters were interesting to say the least.

I feel a lot of sympathy and compassion for the torrents and for Rachel as well. I was intrigued by the characters and their circumstances.

I am eager to find out more about Rachel, her grandparents, Telov, and of course the torrents too. I also can't help but feel there is something suspicious going on with Emma and Todd.

This was a great start to a series full of intrigue, shifters, secrets, deceit, cover ups, danger and much much more.

I really liked the suspense and surprising twists that were found between the pages of this book. It was overflowing with it!

I don't want to give too much away but I will say that if you like shifters and suspense, you should read this one.

I received an ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. It was thrilling!

  1. this one made me quite curious ( perhaps it's the lion shifter^^,, i need a good oen like that after the last i've read because lion are not my favourite at all), no really a sweet well written romance is always great ( steamy can be also of course) but i do understand that you had little difficulty to be completely immersed if something was missing betewen teh characters....
at teh same time when it's slowly built it can be even better but we will have to see the rest of the series

on teh maybe list until teh series is complete then but i'm really curious

    1. You would most likely love this. It is very suspenseful. The book was not at fault for my struggle, it was just me craving more romance than was being offered.

  2. I like suspenseful ones and throw in shifters even better. But I can relate to sometimes just not getting into the book because you want just a smidge of romance. Or at least some chemistry. I'll add it to my maybe pile.
