VBT: Giveaway, Guest post by Susan Arden author of Tempted by Trouble, and my Review

Susan Arden has written a guest post for me today. :D Thank you Susan!

Part 3: Crafting a Sexy Scene: Pile Kindling on the Fire

Hey, this is the next post in our series of how to power-up the heat factor. So far we’ve fanned the flame, and gotten the flame to burn in our hot western Tempted. Now we need to boost the “fire” factor making certain our hero and heroine are put into a position of being oh-so-willing participants.

In Tempted we have Carolina and Matt right after the wedding ceremony of her cousin. They see each other and know they can’t keep avoiding one another. So they do what comes natural almost colliding physically. Matt seeks her out and introduces himself. Immediately, Carolina is taken back to discover her “crush” is actually her employer. He in turn realizes she’s the vet destined to help him if he can keep his hands off her. So we’ve piled on the tension in pushing them together, and then making sure each of them knows the other comes with two choices but only one of them is available. At this moment.

During romance, it is this point that the characters know they’re not mistaken. There’s a chemistry between them. Heat, tension, and conflict. At this time, they’re being forced to make a choice. Generally, one that doesn’t fit or feel right. Again, more conflict is brewed into the scene.

Blurb:

When a woman is the magnet for the wrong man, it takes a bad boy to break old habits.

Carolina Rodriguez is a large animal veterinarian on a mission to escape South Florida and her overprotective family. Willing to do just about anything, she accepts a job in Annona, Texas over the Internet from a family connection.

At her cousin’s wedding, she runs into Matt, a handsome Texan in the church parking lot. Matthew McLemore is more than gorgeous, he’s Carolina’s new boss, and needs her help to determine why his cattle keep dying. Matt’s instantaneous attraction to Carolina sorely tempts him to push the boundaries of their work contract, but a roll in the hay may prove too volatile to handle. Until she arrives on his ranch and is too hot to resist.

Carolina refuses to admit Matt’s raw sexuality is more than overpowering or that she's the least bit tempted by this smooth-talking bad boy. But by the time the pathology lab reports comes back, they’ve explored every inch of each other. All of a sudden, this fiery affair is more than just a fling. And when a past flame threatens to overwhelm their new found romance, Matt must find a way to stake his claim to Carolina's heart before it's too late.

Excerpt:

“Evermore Ranch,” she read aloud.

“I hope this won’t upset your plans?”

“Would it matter? I signed a service contract that included a non-disclosure agreement. Even if I had a problem, I couldn’t tell a soul and I’ve promised you two weeks of my time.”

He chuckled softly. “Yes, two weeks to do my bidding.”

She almost choked at the thought of doing his bidding. “What the heck have I gotten myself into with you, Mr. McLemore? Exactly what type of office do you run?”

His expression changed. Sharpened. “Strictly business. Look, Dr. Rodriguez, we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot.”

“Wrong foot … the whole body is a problem, sir,” she hissed.

He smiled broadly, reassuring her. “Let’s discuss this later. This isn’t the correct time or place. Don’t you have to help the bride or something?”

“Yes. As a matter of fact, I do. I don’t know what you think you’ve contracted, but I’ll only supply you with vet services. As long as you understand that fact, there’s nothing more to discuss.”

“Well, there is. In the service agreement, there’s a provision that we need to discuss before you’re allowed access to the ranch barn and stable sites. So, either we can do it later or when you arrive in Texas. But until you and I have a little sit-down and get a few things ironed out, there won’t be any work for you to do directly. I’ve got a ranch to run, and I don’t have time to play games. I’ve already spent enough time finding a vet.” His eyes glittered and dropped to her mouth. “If you think I’m about to waste more time because you’ve got second thoughts, Dr. Rodriguez, the next communication you’ll have from Evermore Ranch will be from my attorneys. Had I known who you were before, believe me, I wouldn’t have … I’d never let the situation get away from me.”

Oh, this was rich. “Away from you. I’d say it got out of control. But that’s on your side of the table. Fine. I’ll honor my service contract. You’re right about one thing. The only thing of interest to me is treating your cattle. Once the job is done, I’ll be only too happy to leave you in peace and we can go our separate ways.”

Up close, his eyes shone sherry-colored. A muscle flexed along his jaw. His masculine scent of leather, smoke, and wood filled her head. The hard set of his mouth didn’t resemble the man from before. He’d done just as he’d promised, shutting one door, and leaving in place a man who didn’t look as if he enjoyed playing games. No this version of Matt McLemore had a locking gaze and if looks could kill, she was a goner.

“I’m glad we understand one another then, Dr. Rodriguez. I expect to meet with you tomorrow at your convenience. Our relationship will be strictly business, if that’s what got you in such a dither.”

My Thoughts:

Adults only for this one! This book was hot Hot HOT!!! In the first chapter there was a scorching scene that takes place in a car. ;-)  Whoooeeee!!!!!

Tempted by Trouble was a story about a large animal vet and a man with dying cattle. The trouble is that they can't keep their hands off of each other and both have issues that they need to get over.

This book was a really quick romance. It was really steamy and had an interesting plot. The ending felt extremely rushed to me. Other than that it was pretty darn good. ;-)

I really hope that there are more books involving this family. I'd definitely read them!

I received a copy of this book from CBLS in exchange for my honest opinion.

  1. i hope you had the ice on hand and the children busy somewhere else when you read this one^^ and i can understand why you would want more of them ( didn't the author introduce more brothers/sisters at teh weddings? none?)

there were cows at the end of my grand mother garden ( the farm was far away but the terrain joouxted hers). i loved to go near them ^^ i even tried to get milk once^^;; unsuccessful try by the way ^^. i had named them and two cames as soon as i called^^ but when i remember the most is my attempt at a picnic ^^

i took everything and i wanted to picnic near them. since i was thoughtful i did prepare a bunch of salad for my "friends".. simple but washed salade... and those arg decided my share of salad with vinegar, oil etc was better so they discarded their part and runned to eat my mine leaving me in tears thinking they were really bad ( in fact my mothertold me i was more afraid than angry because even slepping that night i kept asking if they weren't ill because of the "assaisonement "in my salad

    1. Miki, The wedding was between Carolina's cousin and a man who is Matt's friend. We don't meet his brothers and sister until later when Carolina goes to their ranch.

I had a fascination with cows when I was young. We had a family friend who owned some and they would take me to see them. One cow in particular was my favorite we called it Charlie. I even rode it a few times.

One day we were eating dinner and my brother mentioned that Charlie tasted good. I didn't take the news well!

These days I stick to cow knick knacks and such.

  2. Brenda,
Thank you for this amazing post for Tempted by Trouble and your kind words. I've always been torn about cows. I live in a very rural area, and even researched weather conditions affecting animals wondering how they take to cold and heat. Apparently heat is of the most concern to cattle. The research involved in Tempted for the birthing cows was an amazing adventure. I was a biology teacher in my better days. But watching videos and listening to vets (women large animal vets) was jaw-dropping.Reading articles of all the problems left me wondering what are we doing with creating bigger and heavier animals. On a lighter note, I enjoyed seeing how the cows are so responsive to the vets. My husband won't allow me any large animals at our home which has acreage. He thinks he'll come home one day (in the winter) and find all the animals inside. I think he's right so even though I'd love to start with a calf or a colt...I couldn't bear the idea of me being warm inside and she outside cold. Take it easy and again, much appreciation for this feature. A hig YEE HAW for hot westerns!! And the love of large animals.

    1. You are most welcome. I really enjoyed your book and I am hoping that there will be more to come.

I can't imagine birthing a calf or even watching it. I'd probably be squeamish.

  6. This post's question just makes me giggle. We live on a farm (crops only), but my kids are very involved in 4H. My daughter actually asked for a cow once and I told her I wasn't going to have a pet cow! LOL My kids are animal lovers and do not like to do the market animals (where they become someones dinner).
