Giveaway & Review ~ Fatal Fortune by Elizabeth Delisi

No one in Cheyenne, North Dakota believes in Lottie Baldwin’s psychic abilities; especially not Harlan Erikson, Lottie’s boyfriend and Chief Deputy in the Sheriff’s Office.

When a friend’s husband disappears, Lottie can’t leave it to Harlan to discover what happened to Harry.

Armed with her courage and her tarot cards, Lottie tries to solve the mystery herself, regardless of who attempts to stop her: Harlan, her friend—or the criminal.

Elizabeth's contemporary romance novella The Heart of the Matter is featured in the Valentine's Day-themed anthology Cupid's Capers and was an EPPIE Award finalist. Here's an excerpt:

“I can’t read minds and you know it. I read the cards. And sometimes I get...well…feelings,” Lottie said. “Janet came over to see me this morning. She’s very worried about Harry.”

“I know she is. Unfortunately, there’s nothing the sheriff’s office can do about it until he’s been missing for forty-eight hours, since there’s no reason to suspect foul play.”

Lottie leaned over and grasped Harlan’s hand. “Honey, I have a bad feeling about this. A real bad feeling. Something terrible has happened to Harry. I don’t know what, but it’s serious.”

“You and your feelings,” he snorted, shaking his head. “You know I can’t investigate based on your feelings.”

“Couldn’t you look into it? Just a little? Unofficially? I’m very worried.”

Harlan shifted uneasily in his chair. “I could get in trouble for it. Remember what happened the last time?”

“I remember the Sheriff read you the riot act. But, do you remember that I was right on target when I told you to look for that missing car in the drainage ditch on Route 9 north of town?”

“Yeah. And I’ll bet the Sheriff hasn’t forgotten it, either.”

Harlan was being stubborn; she’d have to try another tack. “No doubt. He doesn’t like me. No one in town does.” She pulled her prettiest pout.

“That’s not true,” Harlan protested on cue. “I like you. A lot.”

My thoughts:

I enjoyed Fatal Fortune. It was easy to get lost in the mystery of what happened to Harry.

This was a relatively quick story. The plot was full of who done-it goodness and some simple romance.

I felt bad for Lottie. I can't imagine living in a town full of people that didn't like you. :( I admired her for wanting to take care of her friend though. She went above and beyond for Janet.

I didn't figure out who was behind it until the last second. There were so many possibilities that figuring out who the culprit was took awhile! Being stumped was a nice change of pace for me as usually I'm pretty good at figuring things out fast.

If you like mysteries, you should read this. :D

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I really liked it and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.

I'd love to know what you're thinking. Please leave a comment!

  3. Thanks for the excerpt and review today.

Elizabeth, you are a new-to-me author and being unfamiliar with your work, I checked out your website. Looks like most of your work is paranormal or has touches of paranormal within the pages. Is that right? I noticed you did a time-travel story. What time-periods do you find the most difficult to research for your stories?

    1. Thanks for visiting, Karen. You're right, I tend toward a touch of the paranormal in most of my books. About time periods, the only period I've researched (so far) is ancient Egypt, and I already loved it, hence my desire to write a book set there. To give it the paranormal touch, I made it a time-travel romance rather than a straight historical. My husband can vouch for the many hours of research...he helped me on some of it!

  9. I just wanted to add my two cents--I loved Fatal Fortune! The unlikely relationship between the ethereal Lottie and Harlan the hard-nosed cop is both tender and funny. I'm not a tarot believer, but Liz works the cards in so smoothly that I almost wish I was. If you like a good mystery, you'll love this one.

  10. Lottie and Harlan are not very common names. How did you choose them? Do you have a process for selecting names or do they just come to you?

    1. Sometimes I use a baby name book and try to find a name whose meaning fits the character. But for these two--"Lottie" was the name of a character on the show "Here Come The Brides" when I was a kid, and I gave my Lottie some of her spunk. Harlan is the name of one of my favorite authors (Harlan Ellison), but also is a common name in that part of the country. Thanks for asking!
