Ten years ago, Audrey MacLaren chose to marry her human lover, making her an exile from the Dragon Kings, an ancient race of demons once worshiped as earthly gods. Audrey and her husband managed to conceive, and their son is the first natural-born Dragon King in a generation–which makes him irresistible to the sadistic scientist whose mafia-funded technology allows demon procreation. In the year since her husband was murdered, Audrey and her little boy have endured hideous experiments.

Shackled with a collar and bound for life, Leto Garnis is a Cage warrior. Only through combat can Dragon Kings earn the privilege of conceiving children. Leto uses his superhuman speed and reflexes to secure the right for his two sisters to start families. After torture reveals Audrey’s astonishing pyrokenesis, she is sent to fight in the Cages. If she survives a year, she will be reunited with her son. Leto is charged with her training. Initially, he has no sympathy for her plight. But if natural conception is possible, what has he been fighting for? As enemies, sparring partners, lovers, and eventual allies, Leto and Audrey learn that in a violent underground world, love is the only prize worth winning.

Here's an Excerpt:

One by one, Leto introduced Nynn to the weapons available to them in the Cages. A machete and a mace. A wicked dagger and a sickle. And one particular weapon that set their kind apart. She eyed it without a hint of recognition.

“It’s a nighnor,” he said. Are you really so ignorant of our ways?”

“I’m sure circumstances have taught us very different things. Can you read?”

“Yes.” His mouth pinched tightly. “My mother taught me.”

“And when was the last time you were aboveground? The last time you saw the sun?”

“How is that important?”

“I’m just curious what you barbarians learn down here, other than ripping out spines. And besides, a nighnor is the ceremonial weapon of the Sath. I don’t know how to use it, but I know what it is.”

He hefted the nighnor. “Go on.”

“Each one is ancient, from the time when the Sath ruled as Pharaohs. They’re said to be the heads of men who denied the superiority of the first Dragon Kings. Coated in iron. Lacquered and polished over the years to add luster. But beneath the metal is bone. Some ancient peasant’s skull.”

Leto shrugged. “So they say.”

“Now forget the mind games, remember? You need me to learn.” Their gazes met. “More than that, I think you want me to.”

“Do not assume anything about me, neophyte.” But he held out the weapon anyway. “Here.”

“You don’t fear my wild reprisal?”

“I would, if I thought you could wield it with one hand.”

Nynn cupped the heavy iron skull. Her shoulders slumped to keep it from dropping to the damp, slippery floor. Training cells were kept damp for just that purpose, to make finding purchase even harder. Once this woman fought on rougher ground, she would be even more sure-footed and skillful.

She would only have what he gave her. Until she won. The thrill of victory combined with basic rewards made reluctant fighters into eager ones.

He had three weeks to transform her.

“Come at me.” His voice echoed off the domed ten-foot ceiling. “This is your chance to let loose the hatred I see.”

He didn’t think she would. Too much sense. Too much pride, when she already knew the futility. Yet the vigor of her sudden attack was impressive. Rather than charge, attempting to strike him, she spun and hurled the weighty weapon. Leto arched backward using the reflexes he’d honed for two decades—no matter his collar. The nighnor hit the wall just over his left shoulder. Shards of raw cave rock splintered out from a crater.

She breathed hard, hands propped on her knees. Without food, pushing that hard would continue to test her endurance. Her eyes shot sparks that were nearly literal. He didn’t like how he was drawn to her blue fire.

He braced his stance. “Learn anything, neophyte?”

“That nighnors are heavy?”

“They are.”

“That I can take you by surprise?”

Hiding his reaction took effort, because she certainly had. As Leto had seen in the Cage, she was a fighter. He would see her blossom into a vicious creature who wouldn’t recognize her own face. That would break her. And that would make her a worthy partner.

“No, you should’ve learned that I do everything with purpose. There are other weapons better suited to your frame.” He knelt to retrieve the dagger. “Take this instead.”

She studied the blade for several moments, as if she could read its purpose. He’d never seen a warrior—let alone an untested woman—assess a weapon with such immediate understanding. And where were the aftereffects of her hazing the day previous? She believed she possessed no gift, but Leto knew otherwise. She was a changed woman.

Now to keep changing her.

Nynn extended her hand and took the dagger. With a slight movement, she twisted the handle until it fit snugly in her palm, the balance just right. Leto felt the rightness like the stir of a distant dream.

“Now the shield.”

She moved quickly, so that the shield’s leather strap already hugged her left forearm. Ready to defend.

Slowly, Leto knelt to retrieve his shield and weapon of choice—the mace. His pulse was up, surging as it always did when anticipating a fight. Beneath the wan light of the bare lightbulbs, he and Nynn circled one another.

“I will be your first opponent in combat,” he rasped.

As if claiming her. Making her his, even in this violent way.

She grinned. Slinky. Sly. “Give me what you can, sir.”

With that, she attacked.

As a young man, sarcastic, violent Tallis Pendray believed the Dragon Kings’ survival depended on a prophecy delivered in dreams by a woman named “the Sun.” His role has been to complete inexplicable, even reprehensible tasks. First, by murdering a priest, he united his fragmented clan in their hatred of him. Dubbed “the Heretic,” Tallis fled his family’s Highland estate. Now disillusioned, he seeks revenge on the woman he holds responsible for two decades of exile.

Telepath Kavya Indranan is a charismatic, seductive cult leader born to a prominent family. However, she grew up terrorized by the ominous threat of her powerful, insane twin brother. On the run and hiding among the poor, she witnessed the destruction wrought by her clan’s centuries-old civil war. Maturity nurtures Kavya’s determination to end the cycle of bloodshed. Those who follow her call for peace have nicknamed her “the Sun.”

Bent on revenge, and without knowledge of Kavya’s noble intentions, Tallis kidnaps her on the eve of her groundbreaking announcement. The two watch in horror as her twin brutally smashes the tentative truce…and hunts the sister whose death would make him invincible.

Kavya is the Sun–revered, untouched, and bound by a lonely destiny that promises a deadly showdown against the last of her family. Tallis is the Heretic–despised and exiled because of actions that seem random, heartless, and contrary to the safety of the clans he protects. She’s not a goddess, and he’s not a natural born killer. A desperate trek from the Himalayan foothills to the Scottish Highlands reveals two secluded souls hidden by bloody reputations. Will their trust be strong enough to avert an all-out war that could destroy them, and their kind, forever?

Cover reveal ~ Fire by T. G Ayer

 About the Author:

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

 EXCERPT:

Fear spun Maya around on stricken feet. To defend her back perhaps. She just felt less vulnerable facing her attacker, where she could see his next move. He barreled straight at her. And for all her training in martial arts, she did the one thing her dad always said never to do. She ducked her head and hid her face with her hands. Hands out, as if she could fend off this vicious attacker merely with the soft skin of her palms.

Maya felt the heat before she saw it.

Byron was on fire. A living column of shimmering orange flames. She couldn't breathe. Was afraid to breathe. How did that happen? She glanced around the bathroom as panic filled her veins, her fear taking on a whole new level of hysteria. She had to put the fire out.

She turned to the faucet to fill her hands with water. And froze. In the mirror she saw the burning reflection of Byron disappear. Byron was there one moment and gone the next. Only a few burnt shards of fabric left to say he was ever there. But she remembered the last thing she'd seen before Byron became nothing: brilliant blue eyes turning a frighteningly blood-red.

And Nik, holding the doorknob, staring at the empty space on the floor behind her.

Drum roll please....

Excerpt:

Hope hauled the last heavy box up the stairs of the manor house, occasionally catching glimpses of the way her midnight black hair shone in the sunlight, when she passed the window in the living room of her apartment. "Thank heavens this is the last one," she muttered to herself, sliding the box down to rest on the floor, before straightening and rubbing the nagging ache in her back. She could have had help, all she needed to do was ask, but now that she was an adult she needed to stand on her own two feet, she reminded herself.

Straightening up, she looked around at the mass of boxes waiting for her to delve into. "Well, gone away and back again. Where do I start first?"

The phone trilled and she started for an instant, before extending her hand to the receiver on the shelf beside her. "Hope."

"Miss Hope, do you require any help? Lisi is wondering if you require her assistance." The muffled voice of one of her guardians flowed out of the earpiece. She had forgotten that living at the manor meant the goldfish bowl lifestyle she had tried her best to escape at college. Not that she’d had much opportunity to live a free lifestyle. She’d been lodged with a guardian family within the college grounds. Even then, her personal team of five guards had shadowed her every move—to classes, shopping and even to the hairdresser’s.

They hadn’t escaped her notice, the looks some of her classmates had thrown her way. Longing for the lifestyle they’d thought she enjoyed. Little did they know, Hope would happily have swapped, a lot of the time. Downtime had existed within a carefully vetted group of companions, each from houses of similar status. The cloying atmosphere she hated, but, nonetheless, she had submitted to her parents’ will. Only a few times had she sought to do activities that they would have deemed inappropriate, but her conscience had always kicked in, and she had derived no enjoyment from the guilty feelings that had overcome her.

"No thanks, Jeffrey. I have all the boxes up here and I am going to take my time going through everything." How could she explain that she needed a freedom that had been denied? That this small and almost insignificant rebellion was one she embraced? But she couldn’t. It wasn’t fair to Jeffrey to share that.

"Fine, Miss Hope. Oh, and I am supposed to remind you, the new Master has requested your presence in his library after sundown."

She nodded, knowing it was expected that she would take her oath of fealty. "Oh. Right. I’ll be down for sunset." She laid down the receiver. It’s one thing to owe your continued safety to a vampire nest Master, but quite another to be at his beck and call all the time, just as her parents had been. Her temper spiked momentarily. The emotion coiled through her then she shuddered, pushing away the negative thought, while absently reaching for the boxes she needed to stack, store or unpack. The rough exterior of some of them brushed against her hands. For now, she had time. Lots of time.

Ripping the tape off the first box, she then started to root through it, unwrapping reminders of her slightly more free college life, formulating arguments to put to her parents, knowing that the dice were stacked against her. Her life had been mapped out since her birth, but perhaps she could find a way around some of the roadblocks. At least she hoped so. With that thought, she set to work.

* * * *

He stretched in the bed, feeling the cool sheets around his body, savouring the experience of knowing he could rise when he wanted to. Luxuriating as he came to full awareness of his surroundings. His bed. His home. His nest. A feeling of exultation swept through him. One he had experienced several times in the last six months since he had become Master.

Xavier had only recently been transferred to this nest, after Cyrus had been called to ascend to a seat on the Council with his predecessor Cressida, the most senior of the vampires on the Council.

A new Master had been required for the nest, a situation arising from the ascension of Cressida who had saved the child Hope from the rogues. The death of another of the Council meant that Cyrus had answered a call to accept a seat. It was an almost unheard of event for a nest to have two new Masters in under a hundred years, but Xavier had accepted his unexpected promotion. Not that he would take it for granted—no, he worked beside his vampires as required, so they knew he would ensure their safety while they ensured his.

The household he had taken over was well run, and he had no fears for the financial status, even though they had lost the manor and many assets during the dark days of clearing the rogues who had attacked the house. Indeed, he had been with Cyrus the night he had ascended and had seen the great strides Cyrus had made during his Mastership.

He swiped a hand over his stubbled face and a voice to his left said quietly, "Master, refreshments for you." A crystal goblet appeared in a white hand at the edge of his vision. He accepted it with a grunt, the ruby red liquid inside calling to him on a primal level. Blood wine. Sustenance that would ease the clawing hunger he always felt on awakening.

His teeth extended and his mouth opened. The first drop touched his tongue and a frisson moved through him, the ecstasy of drinking flowing into his body. He took his time, savouring the flavours.

Young.

Full bodied.

Tart aftertaste. The wine, the only human sustenance he could now enjoy. Food was relegated to a memory of things long past.

He closed his eyes as the last drop flowed, and breathed deep. Yes, a Master could very quickly become accustomed to this lifestyle, but not now and not today. He needed to meet this Hope, the one who had turned their entire world upside down. James had told him little about his daughter, save that she would need to remain within the house, protected from the world. That someday she would assume the mantle of leading the house from within, while her brother oversaw the legal and financial affairs of the nest.

He pushed the bed covers away, unconcerned about nudity as he padded to the bathroom. He might be a vampire, but he still bathed and shaved, a thought that made him chuckle. Even after all these years, when vampires had made their entry into the human world, humans outside nests thought vampires had no need for those daily rituals.

He moved through his ablutions. She would be waiting for him, but he would present himself to her in his most urbane incarnation. She would take her oath of fealty, then he would meet with his advisers, James and David leading the human contingent.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this vampire story. It was quick, hot, full of surprises and meant for adults only. ;-)

There was action, a huge secret, mean family members, a hot master vampire, romance, and plenty of sizzle too.

Hope struggles with the need to be free. She was raised to be part of a vampire nest and is just now coming home from college. There is a new master vampire that she hasn't met yet.

Her parents are acting strange. They are being cruel and uncaring and she doesn't know why. Hope also doesn't understand the desire she feels towards Master Xavier. She's been raised to know her place and under the Master isn't it.

Their nest comes under attack and Hope soon comes to find out that she is the reason.

After this attack, other things come to light and they try to get ready for the next attack. Hope and Xavier become close and it seems that they may not have much time together.

I recommend The Blood Bride to those of you who like vamps, or are looking for a quick, hot, sizzling read.

I received an ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to continuing with this series.

VBT: Review ~ Chameleon by Kelly Oram

Chameleon (Supernaturals #1)

For small-town rebel Dani Webber magic and monsters are no more real than the Easter Bunny… until the day she accidentally stops time. Dani quickly discovers that not only do supernaturals exist, but she herself is one of them. This is great news for her life-long best friend Russ, who can finally come clean about his own supernatural status and his undying love for her. Before the two can start to enjoy the long overdue relationship, Dani is taken by a powerful council of supernaturals who believe she is the Chosen One destined to save them from extinction.

As if being kidnapped and expected to save the world isn’t bad enough, an ancient prophecy warns of the Chosen One’s dark nature: “Only the truest love will keep her an agent for good.” The council believes they know who this “true love” is and, unfortunately, that person isn’t Russ. The mysterious, powerful and devastatingly handsome Seer is the last person Dani wants in her life, but when she starts having visions of a horrific future, she has no one else to turn to for help.

Soon Dani finds herself torn between two very different boys with two very different opinions of whom she can trust. With the visions getting worse and time running out, Dani is forced to put aside her feelings and work with both the Seer and Russ before an ancient evil is unleashed upon the earth.

Excerpt:

“This…” Russ put his fingertips on my cheek and dragged them down my neck, then brushed them back and forth along the length of my collarbone. It was too much to handle. My breath caught in my lungs and I started to tremble.

“The chance to touch you like this,” Russ said. “In a way that could never be mistaken for friendship, it’s all I ever think about anymore.”

A loud, slow clap startled both Russ and me from the trance we’d fallen into.

Standing twenty feet away on the edge of the lake was a tall man with sun-kissed skin and shaggy brown hair that fell in his eyes and curled out behind his ears. He looked about twenty-five and had arms that bulged out from the sleeves of his t-shirt. I had no doubt he could bench-press like five of me.

He was good-looking, but he was a stranger. Which, in our quiet little town that was so far off the beaten path people only came here when they had a really good reason to, was highly unusual.

“Now that was a line,” he said with amusement. “Seriously, I’m going to have to use that sometime.”

“Yeah, and until you showed up the line was working,” Russ called out in a voice full of false friendliness. “So, uh, show a little decency and find somewhere else to be.”

The stranger laughed. “I like you. You remind me of myself. If I were you I’d give the girl a kiss while you have the chance.”

When Russ’s muscles tightened I gently put my hand on his arm. “Be careful. There’s something about him. I can feel him like I feel you and your dad.”

Russ glanced at me. “He’s a supernatural?” he whispered back. “Are you sure?”

“As sure as I can be.”

I looked back at the stranger. It didn’t look like he was in a hurry to follow Russ’s advice to get lost. He walked over to the pile of clothes Russ and I had left on the shore and picked up my shirt. “This is a nice color for you, Danielle. I like it when girls aren’t afraid to wear a little color. Why don’t you come out of there and let me see how it looks on. I assume you’ll want to be dressed for our journey.”

Russ pushed me behind him. “And just what journey are you talking about?” he asked while I had another question.

“How do you know my name?”

“You’d better get used to that, Dani. Pretty soon every supernatural in the world will know your name. News travels fast, and the rumors about you, well, let’s just say you’re a bit of a celebrity. That’s why I’m here. I’ve come to fetch you for my boss. He’s very interested in meeting the one who’s supposed to fulfill the prophecy.”

To my surprise Russ let out a gasp and looked at me with wide eyes.

“That’s right,” the stranger said to Russ. “The Seer has predicted it. No doubt the council is already on their way to steal and corrupt her for their own purpose. My job was to get here before they do.”

Prophecy? Seer? Council? This entire conversation was over my head.

“What’s he talking about?” I asked Russ, but he ignored me. His attention was fixed on the stranger.

“Looks like he’s on steroids and likes to play fetch for his master? Must be a werewolf.” When the stranger grinned proudly Russ matched his smirk. “That explains the smell.”

“Just as your magic explains your misguided sense of superiority young master warlock.”

“You’re not taking her anywhere.”

“Danielle.” The werewolf addressed me suddenly. “Your boy toy here is overconfident. I’m a full-grown werewolf—second in command of my pack, and a trained worrier. A few beginner knockback spells from a young warlock-in-training won’t be any match for me. Come with me now and there doesn’t have to be a fight, but if he tries anything I will kill him.”

I didn’t have to think about his request. His threat was obviously real so I headed for the shore before Russ could stop me.

“Smart girl,” the werewolf said tossing me my shirt.

My Thoughts:

Of Kelly's books that I have read, I have loved them all. To my knowledge, this is her first paranormal romance. I thought it was a terrific start to a new series. I will be following this series for sure!

You will find warlocks, witches, vampires, fae (though only one so far), werewolves, nephilim, demons, and a heroine who is extra special in Chameleon.

Dani is very powerful but doesn't even know it. She doesn't realize that the things that go bump in the night are real. She doesn't even know that her best friend and recent crush, Russ, is a warlock. At least not until the night he tries to tell her. She freaks a little and then accepts a date with another guy. Russ gets a little jealous and sets into motion some actions that bring Dani's power to the surface. Talk about a surprise!

Russ and his father who also happens to be a warlock, try to talk her through it but she is stunned. Eventually she relents and agrees to talk with them. Shortly after that her whole world falls apart.

The council takes her away against her will. She is basically told that this will be her new home and that her old life is over.

She is introduced to the Seer. He is the one who "found" her and sent the council to retrieve her. She is attracted to him even though she loves Russ.

There is so much more to say but I don't want to ruin any of the surprises. Believe me there are plenty!

Chameleon has romance, a love triangle, supernatural beings, danger, action, and mystery all woven neatly into a compelling plot. There is something for everyone.

I have to admit that I was a little upset by the love triangle as Dani doesn't pick the guy that I would have wanted. At first I was a little disgruntled but I am sure that it will work out with the other guy. I just wish that it didn't leave the one she didn't pick heartbroken.

The man behind all of the attacks really surprised me. I really didn't see it coming!

I recommend this to everyone who likes YA paranormal books. The romance was mild with no more than kissing happening.

I received an ecopy from the author in exchange for my honest opinion. I was hooked from the beginning and I thought it was awesome. I can't wait to read the next book. I hope that it doesn't take too long! :-)
